Much like the bewildered passengers of Flight 828, the supernatural drama makes a triumphant comeback, unleashing a barrage of mind-bending plot twists that will instantly draw viewers back in. And if you thought the first three seasons were mind-boggling, brace yourself for the rollercoaster ride that is season four, part one.
Following NBC’s abrupt cancellation of Manifest after its third season, fans were left hanging. However, the story didn’t end there. The gripping series found a new home for its fourth (and final) season, with part one now available for streaming on Netflix. Naturally, I devoured the episodes with eager anticipation, captivated by the mounting suspense. (Fear not, I won’t spoil any major season four surprises, but do be warned—there are spoilers ahead from season three.)
But before delving into the latest season, let’s recap: Manifest centers around the passengers of Montego Air Flight 828, who find themselves transported to New York City and discover that they’ve arrived five and a half years into the future. While they were presumed dead by the rest of the world, their sudden return poses myriad challenges for their loved ones, compounded by their newfound ability to experience “callings”—mysterious visions guiding them to take action or aid others.
As season three unfolds, a covert task force investigates Flight 828, led by NSA director Robert Vance. However, the finale sees the reconstructed plane vanish with the captain aboard. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes as Grace is killed, Angelina absconds with Grace’s child, and Cal mysteriously ages five years upon his return home.
Now, the burning question is: What comes next?
Two years have elapsed since the season three finale, and the Stone family is reeling. Ben Stone, once a stalwart leader, is now a shattered man, consumed by the quest to find his abducted daughter despite law enforcement giving up hope.
Meanwhile, Cal assumes a new identity as Gabriel, confined to home for his safety and estranged from Ben. Michaela faces the daunting task of navigating the lifeboat—the shared connection among passengers concerning their callings and impending death date—alone, while Zeke shoulders the burden of supporting the family with his empathic abilities. Saanvi and Robert endeavor to investigate Flight 828 with scant resources following the government’s closure of Project Eureka.
To sidestep significant spoiler territory, I’ll refrain from delving too deeply into the plot, but I will reveal that the Stones and their inner circle are edging much closer to unraveling the truth behind that fateful flight—partly thanks to the recovered black box glimpsed in Netflix’s initial trailer. Moreover, fans will be relieved to discover that they won’t be left entirely in the dark concerning the two-year gap. Interspersed among present-day events are poignant flashbacks from that period. And, indeed, there’s an abundance of enigmatic callings and symbolic clues to fuel numerous new theories and Reddit discussions. However, a notable improvement lies in the treatment of the show’s supporting characters, who now enjoy more agency and screen time compared to previous seasons.
Take Jared, for instance (portrayed by J.R. Ramirez), initially introduced as Michaela’s ex embroiled in a love triangle. Yet, his character has since undergone development, with revealing flashbacks shedding light on his backstory. As for Michaela’s former partner, Drea (played by Ellen Tamaki), she becomes even more deeply enmeshed in the family’s quest to decipher the callings. Meanwhile, 828ers like Angelina, Adrian, and Eagan continue to stir up enough trouble to keep viewers thoroughly engaged.
In essence, Manifest retains its knack for intertwining the supernatural and the peculiar with profoundly human themes, ranging from grief and loss to redemption. It deftly leverages a formula that has consistently captivated audiences, unveiling twist after jaw-dropping twist while tantalizingly hinting at answers to keep viewers perpetually guessing.
Hats off to Netflix for executing an 828 and rescuing this gem, ensuring it receives the conclusion it deserves.
With compelling storylines, nuanced character development, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, Manifest season 4 kicks off with a bang. It lays a sturdy groundwork for the remaining episodes of the final season, offering reassurance that many lingering questions from season three will at last be addressed. While Netflix has yet to confirm the release date for the final episodes, given that filming for both parts of season 4 has wrapped, anticipation for the premiere is undoubtedly high.
