Gangs of Galicia (Netflix) shines in the crime-thriller genre, and its latest release promises a gripping look into the dark underworld of gangs in Cambados. With plenty of twists and turns, will this series make a lasting impression on us?

When lawyer Ana’s father unexpectedly passes away, she uncovers startling truths about him during the reading of his will. In her confusion and shock, she relocates to the small town of Cambados, where everyone knows everyone, and the arrival of a skilled lawyer does not go unnoticed. There, she meets Daniel, the son of a drug trafficker and leader of the Padín clan. As their paths cross, Ana begins to suspect that Daniel may be linked to her father’s murky past.
The problem with Gangs of Galicia is that it is utterly and mind-numbingly boring. Despite being labeled as a crime-thriller, there is barely any crime or thrill throughout most of the runtime. Instead, Daniel, the supposedly feared drug trafficker, spends his time looking charming and developing a romantic relationship with Ana, the spirited lawyer from Madrid. The first episode drags on painfully, presenting information in the most lackluster way possible, devoid of any personality or flair.
The long episodes only exacerbate the issue, making the series feel sluggish and padded with unnecessary content. The storytelling lacks the tightness needed to keep us on the edge of our seats, an essential quality for any thriller. The main problem is that Gangs of Galicia isn’t really about drugs or gangs; it focuses on romance and interpersonal relationships, which ends up being thoroughly uninteresting because that’s not what viewers signed up for. While romance can work well as a subplot in a thriller, when it dominates the story, it becomes grating.
Another issue is that the characters lack charm, making it hard for us to root for them or their romance. They come across as bland and devoid of personality. The storyline is so clichéd that you can predict it from a mile away. Take Ana, for instance—upending her life to uncover her father’s secrets. Sure, one might take some time off to grieve and seek the truth in a healthy manner, but joining a drug trafficking gang in a small town to unearth a 20-year-old secret is far-fetched. While people react differently, there’s a certain level of sane and balanced behavior we all recognize.
Beyond the unbelievable motivations and decisions, Ana and Daniel’s relationship is both irritating and unnecessary. There’s no passion, and it’s hard to see why a lawyer and a gang leader would genuinely fall for each other. It only makes sense if the lawyer is corrupt, which Ana is not. Do neither of the protagonists understand this? The motivations are confusing and lackluster, and the extended runtime only highlights these flaws.
Forgettable and unimpressive, Gangs of Galicia is overly long and lacks the excitement needed to keep you engaged. Despite being marketed as a crime-thriller, there is little happening to sustain your interest for long.
