Dedh Bigha Zameen (Jiocinema) Review :-
The story unfolds in Uttar Pradesh, where Anil Singh (Pratik Gandhi), a modest proprietor of a food grains shop, endeavors to arrange a marriage for his sister, Neha (Prasanna Bist). However, the prospective in-laws demand a substantial dowry, compelling Anil to sell a piece of land inherited from his father. Yet, he discovers that the land has been unlawfully seized by the local MLA. Advised to surrender by the broker, Anil refuses to relent. He exhausts every legal recourse, engaging with the police, courts, and even confronting the MLA directly in his quest for justice and the retrieval of his land. As the narrative unfolds, Anil faces escalating challenges, including fabricated accusations and intimidation tactics. Despite the familiar theme of commoners combating corrupt officials, director-writer Pulkit delivers a compelling and gritty portrayal of Anil’s struggle against systemic injustice, imbuing the film with suspense and drama.
While the premise holds promise, the narrative of the film struggles to fully embrace its potential as a thriller. The conclusion, in particular, leaves audiences yearning for more as Anil’s fight reaches a critical juncture. A deeper exploration of the collusion among brokers in the land seizure and a more satisfying resolution could have elevated the overall impact of the film.
Pratik Gandhi delivers a remarkable performance, convincingly portraying both the ordinary and later the agitated Anil. His portrayal shines in scenes where he confronts authorities at the police station or when his lawyer brother-in-law, Bablu Bhaiyya (Mukesh Chhabra), unveils the scheme to him. Khushaali Kumar’s portrayal of Anil’s wife is equally impactful. She adeptly captures the mannerisms and dialect of an Uttar Pradesh housewife, portraying a character who is obedient yet assertive, offering reasoned opinions. Prasanna Bist, as Neha, delivers a commendable performance in her role.
The film is worth watching primarily for Pratik Gandhi’s stellar performance and its gritty depiction of a common man’s struggle against corruption and injustice. However, viewers should be prepared for an ending that leaves several threads unresolved.
