‘Appu’ is a touching film delivering a poignant message about the crucial need to safeguard our planet’s wildlife. Visually, the film captivates with its enchanting, storybook-like imagery, sure to enchant young viewers. However, the storytelling may feel predictable and amateurish for adults. While the visuals are stunning, they sometimes extend the film’s duration without adding significant enjoyment, and the background score lacks originality.
Writers Prosenjit Ganguly, Ajay Velu, and Archisman Kar explore familiar themes of teamwork, bravery, overcoming fears, and compassion through the protagonist, Appu (portrayed by Jasleen Singh). The narrative sheds light on the grave issue of elephant poaching and the alarming decline of these majestic creatures due to the demand for their tusks.
When Appu’s father, Kannan (played by Samay Thakkar), falls prey to hunters, Appu defies the odds and embarks on a daring mission to rescue him from the clutches of notorious poachers. Along the way, he finds companionship in the loquacious dog Tiger (portrayed by Prosenjit Ganguly) and a runaway young girl, Neena (portrayed by Sonal Kaushal).
The antagonist, Don (portrayed by Manoj Pandey), reminiscent of Gabbar, may feel clichéd, but the vibrant jungle setting and captivating visuals enhance the storytelling.
The film’s downfall lies in its overly dramatic dialogues, which detract from the enjoyment of experiencing India’s first 4K animated film. For example, lines like, “aapno ko khone ka dard samajhti hoon (I understand the pain of losing my own people)” seem exaggerated. However, the voiceover artists excel in breathing life into their characters and conveying the emotional depth of the narrative.
Despite its predictable plot and occasional flaws, ‘Appu’ effectively conveys the #ElephantLivesMatter message, advocating for the conservation and protection of our planet’s natural heritage. While the film may not revolutionize storytelling, its vital message and charming characters make it a worthwhile watch.
