Based on the film The Lovers, this romantic comedy introduces us to two couples: Kavya (played by Vidya Balan) and Vikram (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy), and Aniruddh (played by Pratik Gandhi) and Nora (played by Ileana D’Cruz). However, the focus shifts to Kavya and Aniruddh, who find themselves trapped in the routine of married life. The film follows their journey as they contemplate separation and unexpectedly embark on a trip to Ooty for Kavya’s grandfather’s funeral. This unforeseen event reignites their marital flame, forcing them to confront a challenging decision.
While the premise of rediscovering love or choosing between spouses and lovers is not novel, director Shirsha Guha Thakurta offers a fresh perspective. The film refrains from moralizing or melodrama, opting for a light-hearted approach even in moments of adultery.
Debutant director Thakurta, along with writers Suprotim Sengupta and Eisha A Chopra, crafts a breezy narrative infused with humor, even amidst tense situations. Aniruddh’s nervous blunder, mistakenly addressing his father-in-law as “Appam” by mixing “Appa” and “Uncle,” is just one of many instances.
While the first half breezes by, the film encounters a slight stumble in the second half. Kavya and Aniruddh’s attempts to balance their rekindled romance with their existing relationships become repetitive, causing the narrative to lose momentum. The initial flashes of brilliance fade as the second act progresses.
The film boasts skillful treatment, credited to cinematographer Kartik Vijay, ISC. A slick soundtrack featuring performers and non-film artists like Lost Stories, The Local Train (Tu Hai Kahan sung by Lucky Ali), When Chai Met Toast, Abhishek-Ananya, and Subhajit Mukherjee adds depth to the narrative.
However, the film’s true strength lies in its lead cast. Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi exhibit undeniable chemistry, captivating viewers with their passionate reunion, depiction of a faltering marriage, and building tension. Ileana D’Cruz shines as the occasionally whiny yet endearing girlfriend. Sendhil Ramamurthy delivers a convincing performance as the hotshot and artistic photographer.
Despite its uneven pacing, particularly in the latter half, ‘Do Aur Do Pyaar’ remains a watchable romantic comedy, thanks to its stellar performances, humor-infused script, and beautiful visuals.
