ULTRAMAN: RISING (Netflix) ‘Ultraman: Rising’ opens in Odaiba, Japan, where we glimpse Ken Sato’s childhood flashback, deeply influenced by his father’s fascination with kaiju—giant monsters akin to Godzilla. Fast forward twenty years, Ken (played by Christopher Sean), now a renowned baseball star, grapples with the complexities of fame and his secret identity as Ultraman, the legendary hero. His carefully managed life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes the reluctant guardian of Emi, a 35-foot-tall baby kaiju with a fiery breath. Despite Emi’s fearsome appearance, she reveals a lovably vulnerable side, akin to a playful water dragon.
Directed by Shannon Tindle and co-written with Marc Haimes, the film weaves a classic superhero tale around Ken, who juggles his athletic career, superhero responsibilities, newfound parenthood with Emi, and his evolving relationship with his father, Professor Sato (Gedde Watanabe). This narrative complexity challenges the film to seamlessly blend high-octane action with poignant emotional beats, a balance mirrored in its art style.
‘Ultraman: Rising’ dazzles with its hyper-stylized CG animation, particularly in its epic set pieces. Director Shannon Tindle crafts a visually stunning journey, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the electrifying battles featuring Ultraman. A standout moment is the breathtaking clash between Ultraman and a colossal robot amidst the Tokyo skyline, each movement intricately animated to grip audiences with its intensity. However, viewers expecting non-stop action might find the film’s emphasis on emotional depth and Ken’s paternal responsibilities occasionally slowing the pace. Despite solid voice performances, the inclusion of multiple subplots can lead to pacing issues, suggesting that a more streamlined narrative could have enhanced focus on the core storyline. Nonetheless, ‘Ultraman: Rising’ stands out as a visually stunning and crowd-pleasing addition to the revered Japanese superhero tradition.
