‘The Wilds,’ created by Sarah Streicher, returns with an eight-episode second season that maintains its entertainment value and brisk pace. However, some of the initial charm dissipates as the show expands its cast, making it feel like an extension of the groundwork laid in the first season. While similar survival dramas like ‘Lost’ and ‘Yellowjackets’ exist, ‘The Wilds’ stands out by openly portraying itself as an experiment from the outset, keeping both characters and viewers guessing about what will unfold next.
Gretchen Klein (played by Rachel Griffiths) is a scientist determined to prove the effectiveness and reduced violence of a matriarchal society. To test her theory, she orchestrates “The Dawn of Eve,” a meticulously planned experiment disguised as an island retreat. The survivors of the plane crash are unknowingly placed there and monitored by Gretchen. In the Season 1 finale, Leah (portrayed by Sarah Pidgeon) discovers the true nature of their ordeal, realizing they are subjects in a psychological experiment. Moreover, she learns about another program called “Twilight of Adam,” where eight young men face similar challenges, believing they are stranded on a desert island.
While Season 1 focused on the emotional and character development of the girls, Season 2 shifts its focus to the boys, placing them in perilous situations. The season continues immediately after a shark attack, which results in Nora’s disappearance and Rachel losing her hand. Leah, on the brink of revealing Nora’s secret, is left bewildered by the events. The story revisits the past, showing the “Adam” recruits experiencing similar circumstances as the girls before their plane crash. This introduces us to charismatic Raf, commanding Kirin, outgoing Josh, Ivan, Bo, Scotty, and stepbrothers Henry and Seth.
From the outset, it’s evident that something went awry with the boys’ team, as Gretchen celebrates the longer survival of the “Eve” team over the “Adam” team. However, there’s more to the experiment than meets the eye. The directors skillfully transition between the island scenarios and present-day interrogations, revealing the boys’ backstories and adding depth to their characters.
Reign Edwards and Sarah Pidgeon shine among the girls, with Mia Healey and Erana James exploring their relationship dynamics. Jenna Clause’s portrayal of Martha delivers a poignant storyline. Among the boys, Zack Calderon impresses as Raf, Nicolas Coombe connects emotionally as Josh, and Alex Fitzalan’s Seth elicits strong emotions from the audience. Rachel Griffiths convincingly portrays Gretchen Klein, the mastermind behind the experiment.
While Season 2 keeps viewers engaged with its continuous revelations, the male characters receive less development compared to the females in the first season. The plot feels overloaded with characters, their backstories, and interrogations, packed into just eight hour-long episodes. Despite these shortcomings, ‘The Wilds’ Season 2 remains an intense and enjoyable watch, concluding with yet another twist as it sets the stage for its third season.
