The Waking of a Nation (SonyLiv) Review :-

In The Waking of a Nation, Taaruk Raina plays a lawyer whose allegiance to the British crown is shattered when he witnesses the brutal atrocities they inflict on his fellow countrymen. The series offers a poignant yet familiar portrayal of the struggles faced by our ancestors, shedding light on the manipulative schemes employed by the British Raj to maintain control over the nation.

There’s something magnetic about Raina, who carries this series on his shoulders. He’s one of my favorite characters from Mismatched starring Prajakta Koli and Rohit Saraf, and he’s just as brilliant in this role. This show is undeniably serious, portraying the inhumane treatment and horrific racism faced by Indians on their own land at the hands of outsiders. The story is infuriating enough to keep viewers hooked—the sheer amount of hate-watching it triggers is almost maddening! Each new episode uncovers something more appalling, and you can’t help but seethe at the hypocrisy and vile nature of it all.

However, I believe The Waking of a Nation caters to a specific audience. The series is framed through Kantilal’s retelling of the truth behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the events that led up to and followed one of the most tragic incidents in Indian history. It explores both the positive and negative aspects of Kantilal’s life, particularly his relationships with friends like Ali Allahbaksh, Hari Singh Aulakh, and Poonam. While there are moments that will bring joy to viewers, the story is slow-paced and somewhat familiar, offering little that feels particularly groundbreaking.

The Waking of a Nation (SonyLiv) Trailor :-

Kantilal’s personal struggles and his awakening are certainly gripping, taking us on an emotional rollercoaster. The story is also relevant to today’s political climate, shedding light on the larger forces at play. However, it’s not for those who aren’t interested in revisiting history, and there are several moments where the series feels slow and stagnant.

Final Thought

Taaruk Raina’s outstanding performance keeps the momentum going in The Waking of a Nation. While it’s a tense and thrilling watch, there are moments when it feels a bit slow-paced.
