Ritchie adapts a real World War II story with his trademark humor and action-packed style. He skips the typical serious tone of war movies and brings his unique touch to the screen, supported by a talented cast. Although the film takes significant liberties with historical facts, it remains an entertaining watch where actions speak louder than words.
The film follows Operation Postmaster, a secret British Army mission approved by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to destroy the main supply ship for U-boats in a Spanish colony in West Africa. Gus March Phillips (Henry Cavill) is tasked with assembling a team to take down the Duchessa, the key vessel. Special Operations Executive agents Marjorie Stewart (Eiza Gonzalez) and Richard Heron (Babs Olusanmokun) travel to the West African port city by train, while Gus and his team—Henry Hayes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), Freddy Alvarez (Henry Golding), and Anders Lassen (Alan Ritchson)—head by sea. Marjorie sets out to seduce Heinrich Luhr (Til Schweiger), the Nazi commander of the Duchessa. When they learn that the Duchessa will leave three days ahead of schedule, Gus’s team takes a riskier route to save time, knowing it could jeopardize their mission. The operation quickly turns into a fierce battle of gunfire, bloodshed, and explosions upon their arrival.
