A struggling lecturer (Kim Hyun-joo) learns that after the passing away of his uncle, whom she didn’t know she have, she has now inherited a family burial graveyard. Soon she finds herself at the centre of horrible family secrets and a string of murders.

Yoon Seo-ha (Kim Hyun-joo) finds herself grappling with challenges in both her professional and personal life. She toils away in a dead-end job as an assistant to a professor who exploits her, while her husband, yoga trainer Yang Jae-seok (Park Sung-hoon), betrays her trust with infidelity. Just when it seems her troubles couldn’t worsen, Seo-Ha receives news of her uncle’s mysterious death, a relative she never knew existed. To her astonishment, she learns that her deceased uncle has bequeathed to her the family burial ground. However, her confusion deepens upon encountering Kim Young-ho (Ryu Kyung-soo), who claims to be her half-brother and co-heir to the ominous burial site. Meanwhile, detectives Choi Sung-joon (Park Hee-soon) and his superior, Park Sang-min (Park Byung-eun), launch an investigation into the murder, uncovering a series of deaths in the eerie and secretive village, hinting at a family shrouded in dark mysteries.

The series unfolds as a slow-burn narrative from beginning to end. In the initial episodes of this six-part limited series, viewers are left in the dark about the unfolding events. Show creator Yeon Sang-ho, renowned for directing the highly acclaimed ‘Train to Busan,’ prioritizes the creation of a chilling and somber atmosphere, delving into the troubled pasts of its characters. Despite being labeled as a thriller, the series opts for minimal action and instead focuses on building an atmosphere steeped in death and darkness. Viewers must exercise patience as they navigate through episodes filled with more questions than answers. Sang-ho dedicates ample time to develop each character’s backstory and present circumstances, though not all prove equally captivating. While mystery permeates every scene, it falls short of transforming into a compelling and suspenseful drama. Performances by Kim Hyun-joo and Park Hee-soon are restrained yet convincing. The enigmatic dynamic between Yoon Seo-ha and Kim Young-ho emerges as the most intriguing aspect of this mystery, delving into themes of betrayal and complex human relationships. The evocative background score and meticulous production design contribute to the overall sense of mystery.

However, ‘The Bequeathed’ ultimately succumbs to a sluggish pace, testing viewers’ patience and diluting the complexity of its narrative, which encompasses themes of love, deceit, and murder.
