What is the cost of marriage for a dark-skinned girl and her family? A heavy toll of humiliation and double the dowry, as portrayed by Lovely (Ileana D’Cruz) and her family in this social comedy. The film delves into the Indian obsession with fair skin and the challenges faced by a principled and bright Ph.D. student of Anthropology.
With a somewhat predictable narrative, writer-director Balwinder Singh Janjua’s film doesn’t offer groundbreaking insights into colorism. However, it presents a digestible social commentary packaged in a fun, albeit lengthy, manner. The screenplay suffers from overcrowding with characters and situations, leading to a loss of narrative tightness. Nevertheless, it remains entertaining, eliciting laughter from the audience for the most part.
Despite the familiar themes of inner beauty and the cliché of a road trip romance intertwined with family dynamics, the film’s allure lies in its distinct Haryanvi essence. The hilarious characters with their desi humor and regional dialect provide plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Ileana D’Cruz shines as the endearing yet assertive Lovely, although more attention could have been given to her dusky makeup, which appears patchy and inconsistent in some scenes. Randeep Hooda excels as a rugged yet kind-hearted cop, displaying impeccable command over Haryanvi mannerisms and comic timing. Additionally, strong performances are delivered by Pavan Malhotra as Lovely’s father, Meghna Malik as her bua Suman, Karan Kundra as her best friend Guggu, and Geeta Agrawal Sharma as Sombir’s mother.
With a tighter runtime, a fresher storyline, and a more concise screenplay, “Tera Kya Hoga Lovely” could have been a more engaging watch. Nonetheless, it manages to captivate with its light-hearted humor and impressive performances. If you’re in the mood for a sweet, laughter-filled romantic escapade, “Tera Kya Hoga Lovely?” might just be the right choice for you.
