Season 2 of “Taj: Divided by Blood” picks up 15 years after the tumultuous events of the first season. A brief recap montage fails to capture the depth of intrigue, plotting, and bloodshed that unfolded in Season 1. To truly grasp and appreciate the ensuing developments, one must immerse oneself in the entirety of the narrative. Unsurprisingly, the focus remains on power-hungry royals vying for dominance, with women attempting, albeit unsuccessfully, to influence the actions of the men in power. Throughout the series, familial tensions and betrayals overshadow any external threats to Emperor Akbar’s Mughal Empire, which finds itself embroiled in its most challenging era.
Under the direction of Vibhu Puri, who takes the helm from Ron Scalpelo, the story unfolds seamlessly while retaining the signature elements of the show. However, with the gloves off, the narrative becomes more straightforward, with strained relationships among royal siblings and their descendants. Although the pace remains brisk, action is somewhat subdued, leaving a noticeable absence of the fiery Prince Murad, whose confrontational nature often sparked conflicts. Nonetheless, Daniyal’s emergence as a significant character adds depth to the narrative, ensuring that the series retains its unpredictable and brutal edge.
Season 2 commences with veteran superstar Dharmendra portraying Sheikh Salim Chisti, foretelling ominous times for Emperor Akbar. Dharmendra’s transformation, both in makeup and demeanor, effectively brings the character to life, while his commanding voice adds gravitas to his prophetic warnings. The dialogue in this season is notably improved, reflecting the royal era depicted in the show. Aashim Gulati delivers a compelling performance as the aggrieved heir apparent, Salim, while Naseeruddin Shah’s portrayal of Emperor Akbar demonstrates his remarkable talent in portraying complex characters. However, female characters once again find themselves relegated to roles of victimization or futile scheming, despite attempts to carve their own place in history. The series takes creative liberties to introduce gruesome plot twists, adding depth to the narrative.
The saga of Emperor Akbar and the Mughal Empire, steeped in bloodshed, continues to captivate audiences with its portrayal of intricate human relationships and unyielding ambition. In its second season, “Taj: Divided by Blood” delivers on the expectations set by its thrilling and engaging predecessor.
