‘Sunflower 2’ continues the story from its predecessor, delving deeper into the aftermath of Mr. Kapoor’s mysterious death in a suburban residential society. Led by officers Digendra aka DG (Ranvir Shorey) and Chetan Tambe (Girish Kulkarni), the investigation intensifies as attention turns to Sonu Singh (Sunil Grover), who has gone missing and becomes a prime suspect once again. With a blend of suspense, humor, and unexpected twists, the narrative keeps viewers engaged throughout.
Created by showrunner Vikas Bahl and directed by Navin Gujral, this eight-part situational crime comedy introduces more complex characters, each with altered motives connected to the deceased man. One such character is Rosie (Adah Sharma), a mysterious bar dancer close to Raj, whose presence brings turmoil into everyone’s life, particularly Sonu’s. As Rosie and Kapoor’s wife (Shonali Nagrani) enter the scene, the case becomes even more intricate.
While everyone appears to have motives, the killer’s identity remains a mystery until the end. The narrative, focusing on the investigation and each character’s potential involvement, is written with a mix of humor and suspense.
Sunil Grover continues to impress as a 35-year-old salesman with OCD (Obsessive–compulsive disorder), whose eccentric behavior is both off-putting and impossible to ignore. Adah Sharma’s portrayal of the enigmatic Rosie adds depth to the storyline, though her character’s journey feels somewhat predictable.
Both police inspectors, portrayed by Ranvir Shorey and Girish Kulkarni, deliver earnest performances, with Shorey’s portrayal of a no-nonsense cop standing out. However, the subplot involving Digendra and Mrs. Ahuja (Radha Bhatt) feels caricature-like. Bhatt and Mukul Chadda as Mr. and Mrs. Ahuja reprise their roles with conviction. Ashish Vidyarthi’s Mr. Iyer continues his quest to improve Sunflower society.
The mark of the best mystery thrillers is their ability to keep viewers guessing, but ‘Sunflower 2’ falls short of fully embracing the mystery thriller genre. Though mostly engaging, the plot feels somewhat overstretched, missing the opportunity to take viewers on a wild ride with quirky characters. Nevertheless, it remains an intriguing dark comedy, with Sunil Grover’s captivating performance hinting at the potential for another season.
Overall, ‘Sunflower 2’ offers a compelling continuation of the investigation into Mr. Kapoor’s death, blending humor, suspense, and a diverse cast of characters to keep viewers hooked until the end.
