Louise, who operates a wedding planning company, tied the knot with Benhail, a wildlife warden employed in the Goa Forest Department’s wildlife rescue unit. Since their marriage, Louise has joined her husband on various rescue missions.

The couple is now fervently engaged in these rescue operations, sharing their experiences and memorable encounters with IANS.

Louise reflects, “Being married to someone with over 20 years of experience in rescuing wildlife, I’ve gained invaluable insights not only about the species he rescues but also about ethical animal rescue practices and interacting with people.”

Benhail elaborates on his perspective, stating, “To me, wildlife rescue isn’t just about saving animals; it’s about rescuing people from their misconceptions about wildlife. When people fear a snake in their vicinity, it’s not the snake that needs rescue but the people themselves. By dispelling fear through knowledge, we aim to change perceptions and foster coexistence.”

Recalling a poignant incident, Benhail shares, “Once, we rescued a baby flying fox whose mother had been killed. The orphaned bat was clinging to its mother’s chest, and we nursed it back to health before releasing it into the wild.”

Despite being trained as a mechanical engineer, wildlife rescue is Benhail’s passion rather than a profession. His journey began at a young age, driven by a desire to understand why snakes were being indiscriminately killed out of fear.

He explains, “My concern was why snakes were targeted unjustly. I initiated conservation and awareness programs to educate people about snakes, their behavior, and their ecological significance.”

Rescuing wild animals, including snakes, presents numerous challenges, according to Benhail and Louise.

Benhail notes, “Every rescue operation is unique, with different species exhibiting varied behaviors. Understanding these behaviors enables us to overcome challenges effectively.”

However, he emphasizes that crowd control poses the greatest challenge during rescues, as bystanders often intervene recklessly, endangering themselves and complicating the operation.

Louise underscores another challenge, the inherent risk of handling frightened snakes prone to striking out in fear.

“When I began assisting Ben in rescues, I became acutely aware of the potential danger of handling snakes. They lack cognitive reasoning, but Ben’s calm demeanor reassures the animals, facilitating safer handling through non-verbal communication,” she concludes.

‘Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest’ airs on National Geographic at 8 p.m., every Monday and Tuesday.
