Amreek Singh (portrayed by Arjun Kapoor) with palpable excitement as he embarks on a mission to fulfill his spirited grandmother Rupinder Kaur’s (Neena Gupta) final wish. However, this wish is no ordinary one—it involves reuniting her with her ancestral mansion, situated on the other side of the Indo-Pak border in Lahore. For Amreek, this journey becomes a realization of longing and closure, a sentiment his grandmother has harbored for decades. But for the fiery Sardar, as affectionately known, simplicity is a foreign concept. When obtaining a visa for Pakistan becomes an insurmountable obstacle, the outlandish plan of relocating the house to India takes shape.

With its innovative premise, “Sardar ka Grandson” promises a riotous comedy, yet director Kaashvie Nair and her team of writers deliver a chaotic narrative with a disjointed screenplay. While the core of the story revolves around Sardar’s mischievous interactions with her boisterous family, the execution lacks the organic humor it aims for. Despite attempts to inject humor, flat dialogues fall short of eliciting genuine laughs.

The film’s ambitious concept demands considerable cinematic liberties, which the filmmakers take without hesitation. However, the execution falls short, particularly in evoking the emotional depth of Sardar’s longing for her ancestral home amidst the backdrop of the turbulent history between the two nations.

Arjun Kapoor shoulders the responsibility of making Amreek a character worth rooting for, but his performance feels average, especially in emotional scenes. However, his chemistry with Neena Gupta’s Sardar injects vitality into the film, although Gupta’s makeup detracts from the authenticity of her portrayal. Rakul Preet Singh shines as Amreek’s love interest Radha, portraying a vibrant and independent character with conviction. John Abraham and Aditi Rao Hydari make fleeting appearances that could have benefited from a more substantial backstory. Despite a strong supporting cast, the characters come across as clichéd, mirroring the film’s forced conflicts that lack conviction.

“Sardar ka Grandson” endeavors to tell a fresh and heartfelt story, emphasizing the deep emotional ties between the two countries. However, not all aspects of the film resonate as intended, leaving some of its potential untapped.
