Director Anand Surapur, in collaboration with co-writer Shariq Patel, weaves a narrative that thrives on simplicity. The deliberate leisureliness of the storytelling sets a slow-paced tone, capturing the prolonged and sometimes disjointed nature of the investigation. Yet, this approach effectively immerses viewers in the rhythms of village life, where innocence prevails among most, save for a handful of suspicious figures. The film’s allure lies in its ability to sustain intrigue until the revelation of the truth finally unfolds.

The subplot involving blind students Rajat (Pratham Rathod) and Diya (Drishti Gaba) strikes an emotional chord, depicting their struggles and talents within the narrative. Both Rathod and Gaba’s storylines are intricately interwoven, enriching the setting and providing contextual depth.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui excels as SHO Deepak Negi, a police officer grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder. His portrayal, reminiscent of Pankaj Tripathi’s character in ‘Murder Mubarak’, offers a unique twist with Deepak being perceived as an “ajeeb police wala” (peculiar cop) due to his unconventional behavior. Rajesh Kumar, portraying Sub-inspector Naresh Dimri, complements Siddiqui’s performance effectively, despite their occasionally frustratingly casual approach. Atul Tiwari as Manoj Kesari, the school’s trustee, and Narayani Shastri as the strict warden Sangeeta, deliver convincing performances that deepen the narrative’s complexity.

The quaint backdrop of the small town, nestled amidst picturesque mountains and serene woods, enriches the film’s ambiance. Sayak Bhattacharya’s cinematography excels in capturing the natural beauty of the region, imbuing scenes with both tranquility and an underlying sense of tension. This visual allure, complemented by Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s compelling performance, stands out as a highlight of the film.

‘Rautu Ka Raaz’ unfolds as a deliberate, slow-paced murder mystery with wide-ranging appeal. The film adeptly sustains its suspenseful atmosphere, keeping viewers engrossed as the mystery gradually unravels. While the investigation may not be flawless, the film effectively maintains audience curiosity right up to its conclusion.
