Few television finales can match the shock value of Ozark‘s third season. Even the most seasoned HBO aficionados were left stunned when a pivotal character met a gruesome demise, leaving crooked accountant Marty Byrde and his equally dubious lobbyist wife, Wendy, drenched in blood and gore. The subsequent episodes of the first half of Season 4 maintained an unrelenting intensity, a testament to the consistently believable writing and stellar performances. With its blend of criminal intrigue, unyielding tensions within families, and pitch-black humor, Ozark is not for the faint-hearted. Anticipation for the final seven episodes is sky-high, while expectations of survival for the core characters are perilously low.

Following yet another devastating loss, Ruth Langmore finds herself in a dreamlike state, reminiscing about leisurely smoking weed and listening to Nas. Her confrontation with cartel lieutenant Javi is both shocking and inevitable, occurring in the seemingly safe environs of Chicago rather than the wild landscapes of Missouri, where much of the show is set. Julia Garner delivers a captivating performance as the vulnerable yet fierce Ruth, driving much of the ensuing drama.

As imprisoned boss Omar Navarro orders Marty to Mexico in his place, Jason Bateman explores new facets of his character. While Marty has often relied on his analytical prowess to navigate perilous situations, his willingness to resort to violence, as seen in ordering the water torture of a cartel member and engaging in a brutal road-rage incident, showcases a callous disregard for human life.

Laura Linney once again shines as Wendy, embodying the role of the formidable matriarch with aplomb. Whether enduring the humiliation of a courtroom defeat against her own father, negotiating with corrupt senators, or reprimanding gamblers at the Byrdes’ floating casino, Linney infuses Wendy with a mix of frazzled intensity and world-weary cynicism.

In delivering a satisfying conclusion, Ozark faced the daunting challenge that many other shows have faltered under. However, its unique premise—an accountant’s perspective on the futile drug war and his involvement in laundering illicit funds—has been sustained through intricate plotting, compelling characters, and razor-sharp dialogue. With lines like “He ain’t guilty of nothing but being poor and an asshole, and half of that ain’t even his fault,” Ozark solidifies its place alongside Breaking Bad as one of the finest small-screen portrayals of drug dramas.

A chilling and thrilling narco saga narrated from the viewpoint of a mob’s money launderer, Ozark rightfully earns its position among the top TV representations of American drug culture, crime, and corruption.
