In this review of “Never Kiss Your Best Friend,” the series is likened to Bollywood romantic comedies, particularly those of Karan Johar, characterized by their grand settings, affluent characters, and emotional roller coasters set to romantic songs. The show offers a mix of drama, emotions, friendship, confusion, and romance, keeping viewers engaged throughout. Despite its lighthearted tone, the narrative remains engaging but demands the viewer’s attention to follow its twists and turns.
Adapted from Sumrit Shahi’s book, the second season of NKYBF picks up where the first left off, delving deeper into Tanie’s struggles with low self-esteem and the fallout from her failed writing career. When offered the chance to write a screenplay for a web series, she must confront her ex-boyfriend Sumer, who happens to be the director of the show. The plot revolves around their complicated feelings for each other and how they navigate their renewed connection.
Directed by Harsh Dedhia, the series explores the millennial dilemma of love-hate relationships and the confusion surrounding right and wrong. New characters are introduced, including Lavanya (played by Sarah-Jane Dias), an heiress who hires Tanie and Sumer for her web series, and Karan (portrayed by Karan Wahi), an actor whom Lavanya aims to cast as the lead. The subplot involving Lavanya’s feud with her brother and Tanie’s uncle’s love story adds depth to the narrative, although it may feel stretched at times.
Similar to the first season, the series is narrated by Tanie, breaking the fourth wall to establish a connection with the audience. Anya Singh delivers a charismatic performance as Tanie, while Nakuul Mehta effortlessly portrays Sumer, with both actors displaying excellent on-screen chemistry. Supporting characters like Tittu, played by Navaldeep Singh Arora, and Alisha, portrayed by Sapna Pabbi, add humor and support to the storyline.
The addition of new characters like Karan Wahi and Sarah-Jane Dias brings freshness to the series, with both actors delivering commendable performances. The series’ London setting provides a picturesque backdrop, complemented by a captivating soundtrack featuring songs like “Jaane Na Dunga Kahin” and “Phir Se.”
In a sea of crime thrillers and intense dramas, “Never Kiss Your Best Friend” offers a refreshing take on the ups and downs of friendship and romance. With each episode clocking in at just over half an hour, filled with snappy dialogues and vibrant characters, the second season proves to be binge-worthy entertainment for fans of romantic comedies.
