“Naam Namak Nishan” is a title that perfectly encapsulates the core values upheld by Indian soldiers, but unfortunately, the content doesn’t quite live up to this promise. The series lands more in the “guilty pleasure” category, with viewers often sticking around because each episode is just 20 minutes long. Across its 17 episodes, the show primarily focuses on the friendship between the lead characters, a bond that is constantly tested. The cycle of forming a bond, drifting apart, and reconciling happens so frequently that it becomes hard to follow, leaving you questioning whether the writers ran out of ideas. Despite this, the series offers credible performances that make spending time with the characters worthwhile.
The story revolves around GC Yuvraj Singh Chauhan (Varun Sood) and GC Gurbaz Singh Kahlon (Danish Sood), two new cadets at the prestigious Officers Training Academy in Chennai, who are assigned as roommates. Yuvraj hails from a distinguished military family—his father and elder brother hold high-ranking positions in the Indian Army—placing him under immense pressure to excel. On the other hand, Gurbaz is laid-back, takes life as it comes, and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Their contrasting outlooks frequently lead to clashes, yet over time, they forge a close bond. However, their differences continue to resurface, straining their friendship. The tension reaches a breaking point when Yuvraj’s elder brother, Devraj Singh Chauhan (Karan Vohra), uncovers a mole linked to the Officers Training Academy.

“Naam Namak Nishan” starts off strong but struggles to maintain its momentum. The series spends an excessive amount of time on basketball matches between groups at the Academy, which detracts from the main storyline. Additionally, the show fails to give adequate attention to the female cadets, who appear more as incidental characters rather than integral to the plot. The focus remains heavily on Yuvraj, Gurbaz, and a few other male characters, with the female cadets playing only minor roles that don’t significantly contribute to the story’s progression. Devraj’s portrayal is so exaggerated that he comes across as almost superhuman, capable of anything. If the series had taken a more grounded approach, it could have delivered a more realistic and impactful narrative. As it stands, much of it feels overly dramatic.
Despite these shortcomings, both Varun Sood as GC Yuvraj and Danish Sood as GC Gurbaz deliver strong performances. Varun effectively captures the pressure of living up to his family’s expectations, with his brooding expression and serious demeanor adding depth to his character. Danish shines as the laid-back, carefree contrast to Varun’s intensity. Most of the young actors portraying the GCs are well-cast and fit their roles effectively. Although the series includes veterans like Denzil Smith and Purnendu Bhattacharya, their presence does little to enhance the overall plot.
“Naam Namak Nishan” truly excels in its portrayal of camaraderie among the cadets. The light-hearted banter and everyday conversations are executed with charm and authenticity. However, despite these strengths, the series ultimately falls short, leaving viewers with a sense of missed potential. It’s a reminder that when producers overshadow directors in the creative process, such disappointments often follow.
