‘Main Ladega’ may not revolutionize the underdog-hero archetype, but by the film’s conclusion, audiences will find themselves rooting for the protagonist, portrayed by Akash Pratap Singh, and the dedicated team behind the film whose sincerity resonates on screen. Akash’s transformation is particularly noteworthy, considering his initial portrayal as a nervous wreck, a departure from the typical trope of a hidden spark beneath rough exteriors.
Inspired by true events, the film’s script and storyline do not break new ground, and the screenplay, solely penned by Akash, lacks cohesion. However, the narrative slightly compensates for these shortcomings, albeit plagued by pacing issues. Director Gaurav Rana and cinematographer Lucky Yadav contribute significantly, much like the supportive boys at the army school who rally around Akash. Viewers will empathize with the plight of the small-town Class 11 student as he endeavors to protect his younger brother from their abusive father, portrayed by Ashwath Bhatt, and support their mother, played by Jyoti Gauba. Lucky exhibits finesse in cinematography, adeptly capturing scenes of domestic turmoil, Akash’s training, and the intense action in the boxing ring. The music by Gibson George, Akshay Menon, and Mukund Suryavanshi further elevates the narrative, with tracks like Tujhse Pyaar Hai (by Akshay Menon) proving catchy and memorable.
In addition to Akash’s personal journey, his camaraderie with his hostel friends adds a delightful touch to the film. Divya Kharnare, portraying the dorky Pradeep, Saurabh Pachauri as Sonu, and Ahan Nirban as Gaurav, deliver commendable performances, eliciting laughter with their antics. Gandharva Dewan shines as Gurnam Singh, a boxing champion and Akash’s coach. Vallari Viraj’s portrayal of Gauri, the love interest, is adequate, although her subplot extends the film’s length and disrupts its pacing towards the end.
One intriguing aspect of the movie is the portrayal of the family as victims of their patriarch’s inner demons. However, this aspect is only briefly touched upon, and further exploration could have added depth to the narrative.
Despite following the familiar underdog-to-hero trajectory, ‘Main Ladega’ stands out for its sincerity. While the storyline may be predictable, the film’s emotional resonance and Akash’s journey strike a chord with the audience.
