Madgaon Express is a comedy gem, boasting sharp dialogue and stellar performances that will have you laughing out loud. Don’t miss this hilarious ride!
Boys just want to have fun and enjoy the sun in Goa. It’s a dream shared by Dhanush, aka Dodo (Divyenndu), Pratik ‘Pinku’ Garodia (Pratik Gandhi), and Ayush Gupta (Avinash Tiwari) since their school days. But parental concerns and unforeseen mishaps divert the trio, scattering them across Mumbai, Cape Town, and New York. Over 15 years later, their plan finally materializes, but things take an unexpected turn when troublemaker Dodo takes the reins.
Actor Kunal Kemmu makes his debut as a writer and director with this laugh-out-loud riot that will have you chuckling from start to finish in its 144-minute runtime. From Dodo’s comical misadventures with a fabricated social media persona to the trio’s escapades, this comedy delivers a plethora of side-splitting situations and witty one-liners.
The film’s highlights include the sharp dialogue (“With so many participants, the only thing left is to draw lots for our lucky death!”) delivered with impeccable timing by the talented cast. Even in moments of seriousness or danger, the actors seamlessly inject humor into the scene. Credit for this also goes to Kemmu’s adept writing. The movie pays homage to other classics of its genre—like Dil Chahta Hai, Go Goa Gone, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, etc.—without feeling forced. However, the premise of protagonists evading mafia bosses is not entirely novel, typical of a slapstick comedy.
Madgaon Express also features some larger-than-life characters, like the gun-toting and goggle-wearing mafia fisherwomen led by Kanchan Kombdi (Chhaya Kadam). However, the narrative occasionally loses momentum and feels overstuffed with prolonged subplots or discordant situations. For instance, Dodo’s elaborate social media ruse to grab his friends’ attention and a brawl at a fish market, where he and Pinku disguise themselves as fisherwomen, contribute to the film’s runtime.
The spotlight rightfully shines on Divyenndu in this movie. The actor displays impeccable comedic timing and effortlessly embodies the role of a relentless trickster. Pratik Gandhi’s portrayal will have you in stitches every time he mistakenly indulges in cocaine and transforms from a timid mama’s boy to a ‘ten-minute Rambo.’ Avinash Tiwari completes the trio with his portrayal of the most grounded character. Upendra Limaye, as the mafia boss Mendonza (dubbed humorously as Mangola, Mandakini, Mandolin, etc.), keeps the audience entertained with his antics, while Chhaya Kadam delivers a commendable performance.
With its sharp dialogue and stellar performances, Madgaon Express promises an entertaining comedy experience. The wild journey will have you bursting with laughter!
