Shah Rukh Khan appears to relish every moment of his action hero phase in this film. Liberated from the confines of romantic roles, he fully embraces the intense personas of Pathaan and Jawan. In Atlee’s ambitious action drama, SRK portrays a jailer who doubles as a vigilante, but also embodies the patriotic Captain Vikram Rathod. What’s his story?
Prepare for a rollercoaster of twists and turns in this tale of a desi Robin Hood and his tech-savvy, gun-toting allies. Jawan is sprinkled with meta and pop culture references, drawing comparisons to Money Heist, Squid Game, The Dark Knight Rises, old Hindi songs, and The Lion King, but with a unique blend of SRK and Atlee’s flavor.
Only SRK could reinvigorate the iconic James Bond line with his own twist. “Rathod. Vikram Rathod. Naam toh suna hoga?” The king of romance seamlessly transitions into the universe crafted by South sensation Atlee, showcasing a new facet of his talent. Together, they deliver entertainment in this high-octane action thriller that’s grounded in emotion and familial drama.
Jawan pays homage to fatherhood and female empowerment, successfully juggling personal, political, and social themes. The film’s highlight is SRK’s confrontation with his nemesis, where he challenges the politics of religion and staunchly defends democracy—a moment that is sure to garner applause. Writers Sumit Arora, Atlee, and Ramanagirivasan strike the right balance with their dialogues, navigating through humor, tragedy, and revenge.
While Pathaan focused heavily on style, Jawan elevates the stakes with its compelling story and purpose. The women are given their time to shine and are not overshadowed by the hero, despite the plethora of SRKs in the mix. Deepika Padukone delivers a captivating performance in her extended cameo. The clash between SRK and Vijay Sethupathi is a highlight, filled with witty banter and ethical dilemmas. Sethupathi’s portrayal of the formidable villain adds depth to the narrative. Though the romantic subplot between Nayanthara and SRK falls short, the female ensemble, including Nayanthara, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, and Lehar Khan, leaves a lasting impression.
Promoted as an Anirudh (Ravichander) musical, the film’s background score and songs complement its style and tone. “Zinda Banda” and “Chaleya” stand out, although the latter feels somewhat out of place. Despite its lengthy runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes, the film maintains a consistent adrenaline rush, especially in the opening sequence.
Jawan capitalizes on SRK’s star power without being overshadowed by it. Like a satisfying Indian thali, it offers a diverse array of flavors to cater to every palate. The resurgence of ‘action hero SRK’ strikes a chord with audiences, making this film a must-watch.
