Gullak Season 4 (Sonyliv) Review :-
Gullak Season 4 (Sonyliv) Simplicity remains the true essence of life, a constant theme throughout the three seasons of the OTT series Gullak, which continues in its new season. The Mishra family and their everyday escapades mirror the typical challenges of an Indian household, and Season 4 delves into several real-life issues that many families in our country face. At its core are performances that have made the Mishras endearing characters. With flawless acting and a grounded approach to reality, Gullak Season 4 offers an immersive viewing experience, even if it doesn’t quite match the heights of its predecessors.
The season begins with Santosh Mishra (Jameel Khan) and Shanti Mishra (Geetanjali Kulkarni) engaging in familiar husband-wife banter, setting the stage for their respective roles in the household: he as the builder and protector, she as the caretaker and provider. Meanwhile, their sons Anand, aka Annu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta), and Aman (Harsh Mayar) stand at new thresholds in their personal lives. As always, the Mishra family navigates through their trials and celebrates their resilience, much like any middle-class family does.
The first episode introduces the most immediate threat to the Mishras’ home: a municipal officer arrives with a show cause notice. The family must face the possibility that their ‘Home Sweet Home’ might be demolished under Bulldozer Justice. However, the real conflict revolves around Santosh Mishra’s conscience and the challenge of mustering the courage to bribe his way out of the situation, rather than simply the loss of his home. This is cleverly foreshadowed in an initial exchange between Shanti and Santosh, where he proudly claims he will protect their home, while Shanti suggests that Santosh is too soft to fight when things get tough.
In the first episode, Jameel Khan showcases his effortless acting skills. In the second episode, the focus shifts to Geetanjali. Her character, Shanti, experiences unforeseen trauma during a chain-snatching incident, leaving the typically feisty Shanti feeling more vulnerable. Geetanjali excels in this episode, supported by the men around her, both the actors and the characters, who rally to offer their help.
With the parents having established their masterclass in the first two episodes, the focus shifts to the sons. In the following episode, the Mishras embark on a process of organization and rejuvenation, tackling the task of getting rid of old junk in the house. However, for the Mishras, the simple task of selling old possessions to the kabadiwala becomes a masaledar adventure. Aman (Harsh Mayar) has his own schemes, which are not approved by the rest of the family. This episode highlights the dynamics between Anand and Aman, whose conflicts and experiences allow both Vaibhav and Harsh to excel in their performances.
In the final two episodes of Gullak Season 4, Aman and Anand face new challenges and experiences, while their parents, Santosh and Shanti, either nod in approval or shake their heads in disapproval. Aman, the younger son aspiring to be a novelist, finds himself in a tricky situation involving a friend and a date. Meanwhile, Anand, dealing with the pressures of his new job as a medical representative, must find the patience to be a supportive elder brother. By the end of the season, the sons have fully taken over the dramatic mantle from their parents, concluding Season 4 on a high note.
The only apparent problem with Gullak Season 4 is its deliberately slow pace.
While the Mishras drive the drama, supporting characters such as the noisy neighbor Bittu ki mummy (Sunita Rajwar), Anand’s senior Shashi (Manuj Sharma), Dr. Preeti (Helly Shah), and Dr. Singh (Raj Sharma) play more prominent roles in the story. This adds interesting dynamics and variety to the show, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
When portraying reality as it is, there’s no need to add extra flair, and director Shreyansh Pandey and writer Vidit Tripathi embrace this approach. Consequently, much of the drama in Season 4 feels plausible, though not overly thrilling. This might be seen as a critique rather than a fair assessment. In truth, the new season of Gullak remains compelling, though it may not reach the heights of the previous seasons.
