When a real-life crime story is executed effectively, it tends to resonate deeply with audiences, and ‘Griselda’ stands as the latest testament to this phenomenon. This crime drama offers an immensely captivating experience that will keep viewers glued to their seats. Based on the exploits of the notorious drug lord Griselda Blanco, who operated her empire from Miami, the series proves to be a thrilling watch, perfectly suited for a genre-spanning narrative encompassing emotion, action, drama, and real-life events. The significance of this woman and why she was chosen as the subject of this biographical drama become apparent as the series opens with a quote from Pablo Escobar, the world’s most infamous drug lord: “The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco.” With its fast-paced tone, ‘Griselda’ ticks all the boxes for a binge-worthy show.

The period drama begins in 1978 as Griselda Blanco (played by Sofia Vergara) prepares to flee Medellin, Colombia, with her three children, seeking refuge in Miami. Her friend Carmen (portrayed by Vanessa Ferlito), who also fled Medellin under similar circumstances and now runs a travel agency, offers shelter on the condition that Griselda starts anew, leaving her old drug connections behind. However, Griselda arrives in the US with a kilo of cocaine, setting the stage for her ascent in the Miami drug trade. As the plot unfolds, viewers are treated to a gripping narrative filled with tension, betrayal, and ambition.

‘Griselda’ strikes a balance between stylization and fictionalization, taking creative liberties while maintaining authenticity in its portrayal of the era. The plot unfolds at a brisk pace, aided by popular soundtracks from the 70s and 80s, vintage cars, and attention to detail in capturing the fashion and aesthetics of the time. The supporting cast, including Arturo (played by Christian Tappan), Carla, Amilcar (portrayed by Jose Zuniga), and June, all contribute to the series’ allure with their nuanced performances.

Sofia Vergara shines in the role of Griselda, delivering a nuanced performance that captures the complexity of her character. She effortlessly transitions between vulnerability and steely resolve, anchoring the series with her commanding presence. Christian Tappan impresses as Arturo, providing a compelling foil to Griselda’s character. The series also excels in portraying the pervasive misogyny of the era, adding depth to the narrative.

While the series falters slightly in its final episodes, failing to delve deeper into Griselda’s rise and fall, these minor shortcomings do little to detract from its overall appeal. ‘Griselda’ is reminiscent of a commercial blockbuster, delivering an immensely enjoyable viewing experience that will leave audiences eagerly anticipating each new episode.
