“Dukaan” presents an intriguing concept bolstered by a strong lead performance, but the execution falls short, leaving audiences yearning for more. Drawing from real-life events, “Dukaan” delves into the commercial landscape of surrogacy set in Anand, Gujarat. Writer and director Siddharth-Garima examine it not only from a business perspective but also delve into its emotional and ethical dimensions. Jasmine (Monika Panwar) is a resilient young woman toughened by her father’s abuse. Starting a family with Sumer (Sikandar Kher), she turns to commercial surrogacy due to unforeseen circumstances. Yet, she forms a profound connection with the unborn child. Hurt by the biological mother Diya’s (Monali Thakur) rejection of her maternal instincts, Jasmine flees. The narrative unfolds as she fights to reclaim the child, facing resistance from the biological parents who reject her as the child’s caregiver.

Siddharth-Garima craft an engaging narrative exploring the intricate nuances and complexities of surrogacy. Beyond depicting how surrogate mothers commodify their bodies, the film delves into the exploitation often faced by these expectant mothers from biological parents. Moreover, it touches upon themes of love, sacrifice, and complex human relationships.

The screenplay takes its time to reach the heart of the film, with the character of Jasmine taking center stage over the storyline. While intermittently engaging, the narrative fails to establish the emotional connection necessary for such a sensitive subject matter. The crux of the story revolves around Jasmine’s journey to reconcile her mistakes and reunite with her son. However, the resolution feels lofty, simplistic, and rushed.

Anirban Chatterjee’s cinematography creates a visually stunning and vibrant atmosphere, while the music by Siddharth-Garima, Shreyas Puranik, and Divya Kumar adds depth to the narrative.

Jasmine undergoes an intriguing character arc, remaining inherently bold even as she matures emotionally. Monika Panwar delivers a stellar performance, fully embodying the character and commanding attention in every scene. Monali Thakur and Soham Majumdar, portraying the desperate parents turning to surrogacy as a last resort, also deliver strong performances. Sikandar Kher impresses in his brief role as a supportive and unconventional husband.

“Dukaan” presents an intriguing concept with a compelling lead performance, but its execution falls short, leaving viewers yearning for more.
