Following the events of the previous season’s finale, where the Candlemaker abducted Dorothy (portrayed by Abi Monterey), leaving the Doom Patrol incapacitated, Dorothy decides to confront her fears. Refusing to engage in conflict with her former friend, she transports them to a distant planet using her powers. There, she presents the Candlemaker with a choice: remain adversaries on the alien world or return to Earth as allies. Opting for the latter, the Candlemaker agrees, and Dorothy, riding atop him, leads the team back to Earth. However, their joy is short-lived as they discover Chief lying unconscious.

A week later, Jane (played by Diane Guerrero), in her persona distinct from Miranda (portrayed by Samantha Marie Ware), remains comatose. Dorothy insists on delaying Chief’s burial until Jane can bid him farewell. Meanwhile, the rest of the Doom Patrol grapple with conflicting emotions over Chief’s demise. Larry feels emboldened by the negative spirit to venture into space, while Rita copes with her grief by avoiding it until her powers inadvertently manifest during a town play rehearsal, leading to ridicule from the cast.

Left behind by Chief, Rita discovers a mysterious key and card, entrusted with a secret that he couldn’t share with anyone else. Ignoring an ominous warning, Rita opens a hidden compartment in the bookshelf, triggering an alarm signaling an imminent arrival.

As the new season unfolds, the Doom Patrol faces challenges that test their resolve and redefine their relationships, promising audiences another thrilling chapter in their unconventional journey.

Deep within the underground realm, Jane manages to escape a well with Kay’s stuffed toy in hand, only to discover her imprisoned in a cage while the other personalities remain unresponsive. Even Driver 8 is ensnared in a puzzling predicament, with the underground train refusing to transport them to the surface. In a chilling encounter, “Miranda” informs Jane that it’s too late, warning her that only she will remain once Jane is gone. Shockingly, it’s revealed that “not-Miranda” embodies an infection within Kay’s body, comprising every hurt and abuse she’s endured.

Desperate to reach the surface, Kay reveals an old plane they once used for such journeys. However, as Jane prepares for takeoff, infection-Miranda appears, threatening their ascent with destructive winds. Meanwhile, on the surface, infection-Miranda, failing to enlist the Candlemaker’s aid, prepares to end her own life. With the other personalities rallying around Kay, they push the plane through the turbulent winds while Cliff intercepts Jane just as she’s about to hang.

Following Jane’s rescue, Cliff experiences a poignant moment holding his grandson, courtesy of his daughter Clara’s recent childbirth. Rita intervenes in Larry’s internal struggle with the negative spirit, urging him to pursue new discoveries in space. As Larry and the spirit merge, he embarks on a journey into the unknown sky. Jane bids a heartfelt farewell to the Chief, accompanying Dorothy as they lay him to rest with the reimagined Danny the Van.

Elsewhere, Silas Stone visits his son Vic, who reveals the news of the Chief’s demise and grapples with his feelings for Roni. Madame Rouge’s disruptive arrival during the play’s opening night sets off a chain of bizarre events, culminating in her quest to locate Dr. Niles Caulder.

The season’s momentum builds with each episode, buoyed by the exceptional addition of Michelle Gomez and other new characters like the Dead Boy Detectives and the Brotherhood of Dada. Despite the plethora of “weird superhero shows,” Doom Patrol maintains its distinctive charm and top-tier writing in season 3. The series thrives on its character-driven narrative, interspersed with moments of supernatural intrigue and comedic interludes.

Notably, Robotman emerges as a standout character, brought to life through Brendan Fraser’s nuanced vocal performance and Riley Shanahan’s physical embodiment. Fraser infuses Robotman with a unique blend of childlike wonder and seasoned wisdom, anchoring the show with an emotional depth that resonates even amidst the most absurd scenarios.

In essence, Doom Patrol continues to captivate audiences with its eclectic blend of humor, heart, and offbeat superhero adventures, solidifying its place among the genre’s elite offerings.

As the season draws to a close, the Brain absconds with Cliff’s body, leaving the rest of the team in desperate need of inspiration. In a familiar fashion, the season finale, “Amends Patrol,” thrusts the Doom Patrol into dire straits, with seemingly insurmountable odds stacked against them. However, unlike previous finales, their greatest obstacle stems from their internal struggles. Despite Rita’s earnest attempts to rally the team, a sense of hopelessness pervades much of the episode. Thus, “Amends Patrol” primarily revolves around the team reconciling with their inner demons and regaining their sense of wholeness before confronting a looming threat to Cloverton.

One aspect of the season that left me wanting more, amidst its overall excellence, was the minimal presence of The Sisterhood of Dada. Their disappearance from the narrative and the lack of clarity surrounding their actions, particularly the flagellation, raise questions about their motivations and whereabouts. Hopefully, future seasons will delve deeper into their storyline, providing a clearer understanding of their role and objectives. Additionally, the resolution of Cliff’s impending explosion feels somewhat abrupt, especially considering the considerable focus on his and Jane’s perilous situation earlier in the episode. While the last few episodes have presented fluctuating stakes, this inconsistency is most pronounced in the finale.

Despite these issues, the season as a whole excels in many aspects. It marks a significant turning point for the Doom Patrol, signifying the culmination of their journey thus far. Rejecting their predetermined roles, the heroes embrace their abilities and strive to make a positive impact on the world. Rita’s pivotal moment, where she confidently harnesses her powers to halt Cliff’s rampage, symbolizes this newfound acceptance and growth, echoing her dialogue from the pilot episode and invoking nostalgia with callbacks to previous seasons.

A standout moment for me was the poignant interaction between Diane Guerrero and Brendan Fraser, showcasing the enduring bond between Cliff and Jane. Their dynamic, coupled with brief yet impactful scenes between Guerrero and Wynn Everett, adds depth to the characters’ relationships and leaves a lasting impression. Despite occasional narrative inconsistencies, the season resonates with heartfelt moments, underscoring the show’s emotional core.

The finale’s closing moments offer a tantalizing glimpse into the heroes’ future endeavors, hinting at both triumphs and challenges to come. As the Doom Patrol embarks on their next chapter, I eagerly anticipate witnessing their evolution into bona fide heroes in the upcoming season. My affection for this eccentric show knows no bounds, and I eagerly await its continued adventures.
