With bodies accumulating and local law enforcement clueless, a sinister killer roams free, leaving behind a trail of mystery in the serene hills of Kasuali. This serial killer thriller unfolds against the backdrop of a quaint town shaken by the horrifying murders of young girls. The inexperienced local police force is ill-equipped to handle such heinous crimes, prompting Arjan Sethi, a director struggling to find success with his script on serial killers, to reluctantly join the Kasuali police in a junior position. Armed with his knowledge of criminal psychology, Arjan must now put his skills to the test to catch the elusive murderer.
Director Ranjit Tewari and writer Aseem Arrora craft a compelling narrative that maintains a steady pace, punctuated by moments of tension and excitement. The film aptly earns its title, ‘Cuttputlli’, a clever wordplay that becomes apparent upon viewing. Drawing inspiration from the Tamil film ‘Ratsasan’, which itself is based on a chilling true story, the film delves into the mind of a killer, capturing the audience’s interest with its intriguing source material.
While the film succeeds in captivating genre enthusiasts, there are instances where the writing’s naivety is noticeable. Some clues provided by the killer and the predictability of their next move are too overt, allowing the audience to anticipate developments ahead of the investigators. Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Arjan Sethi, struggling to earn respect from his superiors, feels authentic, with the actor embodying the role of a 36-year-old bachelor convincingly. Rakul Preet shines in her role as a school teacher, despite limited screen time, while Sargun Mehta delivers a strong performance as a no-nonsense senior officer. Chandrachur Singh is well-suited to his role as Arjan’s wise brother-in-law.
A successful crime thriller relies on an effective background score that enhances the narrative’s tension without overpowering it, and ‘Cuttputlli’ delivers on this front. The action sequences are executed with realism, and the depiction of violence is restrained, considering the disturbing nature of the crimes. Chandan Arora’s editing keeps the story crisp, although audiences may find themselves eager to reach the climactic revelation.
Set against the chilling backdrop of a secluded hill town, ‘Cuttputlli’ captures the eerie atmosphere of a classic whodunit, pushing the boundaries of a serial killer’s psychopathic tendencies while catering to the sensibilities of its target audience.
