Before its release, Puri Jagannadh’s Liger generated considerable buzz, leaving audiences with high expectations. However, the film falls short of delivering anything groundbreaking, relying mainly on Vijay Deverakonda’s physical transformation for its appeal.

The protagonist, Liger (played by Vijay Deverakonda), raised by his single mother Balamani (Ramya Krishnan), is groomed to become an MMA fighter, much like his father. Balamani hopes for her son to excel in the sport and enrolls him in training under a renowned coach (Ronit Roy) in Mumbai, aiming for national championship glory. One might assume this sets the stage for a sports drama, yet the narrative takes a different turn when Liger becomes entangled in a romance with Tanya (Ananya Panday), a social media influencer who happens to be the sister of his rival, Sanju (Vishu). This unexpected twist deviates the storyline from a typical rich-poor love story, complicating the plot further.

Adding to the mix is Mark Anderson (portrayed by Mike Tyson), Liger’s childhood idol, introduced in a rather exaggerated manner. While the film teeters towards mindless commercial cinema, it fails to engage effectively on this front.

Puri’s trademark illogical storytelling persists throughout the film, with characters exhibiting baffling behaviors. Despite Tanya’s familial ties to martial arts, she displays ignorance about the sport, resorting to stereotypes and misconceptions. Furthermore, certain dialogues and scenes, particularly those involving women, are cringe-worthy and add little value to the narrative. The lack of coherence and originality in the screenplay hampers the film’s impact. Despite commendable efforts from the technical team, including Sunil Kashyap’s background score and Vishnu Sharma’s cinematography, the film struggles to sustain viewer interest.

Vijay Deverakonda’s portrayal of Liger stands out, despite the character’s lack of depth and growth. However, the material fails to capitalize on his potential, resulting in a disjointed performance. Ramya Krishnan delivers a convincing performance as the supportive mother, although her character’s constant yelling becomes tiresome. Ananya Panday shows promise but falls short in delivering a compelling performance. Supporting actors like Getup Srinu and Ali inject humor into the narrative, albeit with limited success.

Mike Tyson’s much-anticipated cameo falls flat, overshadowed by the film’s overall shortcomings. The script lacks focus and fails to provide satisfactory resolutions to its various plotlines, leaving audiences disappointed. Vijay Deverakonda’s talent is underutilized, leaving viewers longing for a more fulfilling cinematic experience. Despite its promise of excitement, Liger fails to deliver, leaving audiences wanting more, but not in a positive sense.
