Although it may seem light-hearted at first glance, Crew offers a compelling perspective on the upper middle class and their dynamics concerning wealth, morality, and the entrapment of lifelong employment.

It’s about time Bollywood recognized that girls just want to have fun, and Crew delivers exactly that. Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine Kohli (Kareena Kapoor Khan), and Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon) serve both looks and hospitality aboard Kohinoor Airlines. Despite their glamorous exterior, each of these air hostesses is grappling with personal battles and hidden secrets. However, their shared struggles foster an unexpected bond among them. When they learn that their airline is on the brink of bankruptcy, the trio is driven to extreme measures for survival, even if it means crossing moral boundaries and dabbling in crime.

Crew takes off smoothly with a stellar first half, but encounters turbulence towards the end. Nevertheless, this fast-paced comic thriller keeps the audience entertained throughout, even when the plot becomes too convenient or implausible. The heist element of the story may not be particularly clever, but it doesn’t try to be, and that’s part of its charm. The humor arises from the characters’ bold and unapologetic approach to life, as they navigate their ambitions, fading vanity, and illusions with style and attitude. Despite their flawed plans, their sheer obliviousness manages to evoke laughter as viewers immerse themselves in their world.

Caught in the crossfire between needs, desires, and morals, Crew offers an intriguing perspective on the upper-middle class and their complex relationship with money, ethics, and the soul-crushing monotony of dead-end jobs. “Bills aren’t paid with ideals,” Geeta reminds herself.

When it comes to the leading ladies, Crew breaks the mold with actresses in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, making for a refreshing and inclusive casting choice in the realm of Indian all-female heist films. Despite the presence of charismatic male actors like Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma, the narrative remains firmly focused on the women, a departure from the norm in most chick flicks. Even with limited screen time, male characters, including a special appearance by Kulbhushan Kharbanda, are far from inconsequential.

While all three leading ladies deliver stellar performances, Tabu and Kareena radiate true movie star energy, showcasing their prowess on screen. As a hustler concealing her loneliness, Kareena exudes both glamour and substance, while Tabu delivers a standout performance torn between responsibilities and desires. The dynamic between the two actresses is electric, with characters distinctly written for each. Their age-related banter adds an authentic touch to their on-screen chemistry. Although Kriti adds to the film’s vibrancy and shares great chemistry with Diljit, she sometimes feels like a third wheel. Nonetheless, Diljit leaves a lasting impression with his charming presence, delivering the film’s most uproarious moment when he questions Kriti, “Why didn’t you follow me back on Instagram?”

For those seeking a dose of lighthearted, madcap comedy, Crew promises an entertaining ride filled with frivolity, humor, and glamour.
