If the classic image of the beloved policeman on the silver screen had ventured into the digital realm sooner, “Apharan” wouldn’t have been as enjoyable. Yet, here we are. While the debut season took its time to grow on us, “Apharan 2” dives headfirst into action from the get-go. We’re swiftly drawn into the storyline with Ranjana (played by Nidhi Singh) indulging in some recreational activities with her free-spirited friends, only to be whisked away by her towering husband, Rudra. Anyone familiar with this formidable cop knows his Achilles’ heel is his affection for his wife. Exploiting this vulnerability, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) lures Rudra into an undercover mission: travel to Serbia and apprehend international criminal Bikram Bahadur Shah (BBS). Spanning 11 episodes, the plot is anything but straightforward. Beneath the nods to retro Bollywood songs and references to larger-than-life film heroes lies a delightful satire on filmy supercops, delivered in true desi style.
While the series doesn’t introduce groundbreaking concepts, its comedic approach, coupled with impeccable timing, keeps viewers hooked. Although it hits a rough patch midway through, courtesy of some scene-stealing performances, we’re quickly re-engaged. Arunoday Singh, reprising his role as Rudra after a hiatus, initially struggles but soon finds his stride. If Rudra is the Frankenstein, Nidhi Singh’s character is the mastermind behind him, with their on-screen chemistry lending the series an organic romantic vibe. Nidhi, known for her natural acting, shines once again. Another standout is Sanand Verma as Dubey Ji, whose talent outshines his supporting role.
Given its association with the Kapoor household (produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor), melodrama and filmy antics are to be expected—and they deliver. “Apharan” Season 2 is akin to the “Singham” and “Dabangg” franchises rolled into one: entertaining, if not entirely original. Director Santosh Singh and his team inject a few twists, though they may not be groundbreaking.
“Apharan” Season 2 pays homage to Bollywood’s heroes, its melodrama, iconic music, and quintessential Bollywood charm. While it may lack the punch of a conventional comedy-thriller or cop saga, it more than makes up for it with its well-crafted humor. And, in the end, we’re left rolling with laughter.
