Rahul Sinha, a renowned journalist, visits his old school to receive an award. As he wanders through the familiar corridors, he finds himself engulfed in nostalgia, reflecting on the carefree days of his school life.

The movie begins with Rahul Sinha (John Abraham), a successful journalist, revisiting his former school to accept an award. While strolling through the halls after the ceremony, he comes across four students facing disciplinary action outside the principal’s office. Engaging in conversation with them triggers a nostalgic journey, transporting Rahul back to his own school days.

During an era marked by the innovative projects of John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar, “Woh Bhi Din The” emerged from the shadows after nearly a decade. Despite its evident flaws, the film captivates audiences with its entertainment quotient. Set in Jamshedpur, it radiates authenticity, with performances that resonate genuinely with its surroundings. The narrative skillfully weaves together themes of teenage romance and the challenges of school life. However, a disjointed screenplay holds back its potential, transforming what could have been exceptional into a more ordinary affair.

Flashing back to his youth, Rahul (played by Rohit Saraf) and his friend Joy Ganguly (Adarsh Gourav) are portrayed as part of a group that prioritizes pleasure over academics. Their days are filled with smoking, watching illicit films, and engaging in forbidden activities. Rahul’s world is turned upside down when he falls for Shalini (Charu Bedi), with Joy playing matchmaker. However, complications arise when another girl named Milky (Sanjana Sanghi) develops feelings for Rahul, straining their friendship. As tensions escalate, Rahul begins to question his choices and priorities, ultimately reevaluating his path forward.

This film marks the directorial debut of Sajid Ali, the brother of Imtiaz Ali, and hints at his potential behind the camera. However, based on this film from a decade ago, it’s evident that his talent at that time was not fully honed. While certain scenes shine brilliantly, there are moments that betray his lack of experience. Sajid succeeds in capturing the essence of small-town school life, local dialect, mannerisms, and atmosphere with precision. The performances resonate authentically with the setting. Yet, amidst these strengths, the film exhibits unevenness, occasionally appearing rugged and unpolished. The narrative dedicates considerable time to Rahul’s pursuit of both Shalini and Milky, somewhat neglecting the potential drama within the school and family dynamics, which could have added depth to the story. Though these moments are captured, they are sporadic and insufficiently explored throughout the film.

Rohit Saraf portrays Rahul Sinha with commendable skill, demonstrating an ability to convey emotions and expressions convincingly despite his youth. He effectively conveys the conflicted nature of a school student. Sanjana Sanghi delivers a sincere performance as Milky, a straightforward character who always speaks her mind. However, it is Adarsh Gourav in the role of Joy Ganguly who truly shines, stealing the spotlight with his natural portrayal. Gourav’s performance reflects a remarkable maturity, evident not only in this film but also in his recent work across various films and series. John Abraham makes a brief appearance as the elder Rahul Sinha, providing the necessary star power to elevate the film’s appeal.

Filmed in 2013 under the title ‘Banana’, ‘Woh Bhi Din The’ manages to offer a fresh perspective within its genre. While the film may occasionally suffer from an amateurish and unrefined quality that can deter viewers, there are certain sequences that captivate and hold interest, allowing one to overlook its shortcomings. This school drama possesses all the necessary elements for a great film, yet instead of delivering a delicious experience akin to a biryani, it serves viewers a simpler fare of plain rice and lentils.
