Wicked Review :-
One of the movies I rewatch the most is Crazy Rich Asians (2018), directed by Jon M. Chu, so Wicked definitely caught my attention. Based on the iconic musical, Wicked explores the origin of the Wicked Witch and reveals how she earned her infamous title. However, the 2024 film only covers the first part of the story, with the second part set for release next year. This means that even though the movie runs for nearly two hours and forty minutes, we still haven’t seen the full conclusion. So, let’s consider whether it’s worth investing in this lengthy yet unfinished cinematic experience.
Wicked captures the essence of high school and early college life, featuring a popular girl, an outcast torn between fitting in or staying true to herself, and a handsome young man who could spark a love triangle. This Archie-like dynamic has been a staple in popular culture, often met with mixed reactions depending on the storytelling and execution.
Over the years, the musical has captivated millions on Broadway, becoming a true blockbuster. The film begins with the announcement of the Wicked Witch of the West’s (Cynthia Erivo) death, followed by Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) arrival to the celebration. Yet, it soon raises questions about Glinda’s past friendship with the Wicked Witch, dating back to their days as students at Oz’s Shiz University.
Elphaba Thropp, a young girl born with green skin, shocks everyone upon her arrival in the world. Not only does she look different, but she also possesses powerful magic that frightens those around her, causing them to shun her. However, Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), the Dean of Sorcery at Shiz University, takes Elphaba under her wing, offering private lessons to help her control her abilities.
Meanwhile, Glinda Upland, who has always lived a life of privilege and believes that popularity is the key to success, initially seems worlds apart from Elphaba. But Madame Morrible brings them together, and their early rivalry soon transforms into a supportive and unexpected partnership.
Chu expertly adapts the screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, bringing the story to life with depth and emotion. As Elphaba and Glinda rediscover each other, they display a wide range of feelings. The film leans into familiar stereotypes of “popular” girls who may seem like “mean girls,” yet there’s always a twist—a Veronica-like character from Archie who, despite her spoiled and privileged background, reveals a more compassionate side, even if she struggles to understand others’ emotions.
What truly elevates Wicked is the way the twist, though foreshadowed, becomes evident in the third act. The powerful often hold the belief, “The best way to unite people is to give them a common enemy.” But when two individuals share similar powers, their goals don’t have to align, and this divergence significantly reshapes the narrative’s direction.
When the action slows down, the actors truly shine. Grande captures Glinda’s carefree, popular-girl persona with her striking looks and vibrant, pink outfits. She effortlessly incorporates her impressive vocal range, even weaving high notes into casual conversation with a touch of humor.
The more challenging role, however, falls to Erivo. Elphaba is the one who navigates the full spectrum of human emotion—ranging from despair and rejection to love, defiance, and ultimately, fury. While Erivo’s performance is exceptional, the character of Elphaba herself lacks the depth and intrigue that truly make Wicked captivating.
Unexpectedly, one of the most powerful scenes in the film takes place during its quietest moment, the interval block. At a school party, Elphaba is mocked for wearing the black hat that Glinda had suggested. In defiance, she creates her own rhythmic dance moves to match the music. The deafening silence, combined with gasps from the onlookers, her eyes turning red, and the tears beginning to well up, make it clear that this heartbreaking moment will have a lasting impact.
Yeoh, who delivered a pivotal character arc in Crazy Rich Asians, now portrays a character who is the complete opposite of what we saw in that film. This shift was expected—after all, in any fairytale, the one who offers help is often the one who will ultimately cause the deepest pain.
Wicked Trailor :-
Despite its many strengths, the movie can sometimes feel sluggish. In a live-action film, where production value is key to maintaining attention, the actors’ performances become even more critical. While Wicked impresses with its grand visuals, they often lack depth and fail to fully engage us in the world they’ve created.
That said, Wicked remains a visual feast, with two standout performances from Erivo and Grande. Their soaring high notes blend beautifully, creating moments that are both musically powerful and emotionally poignant. Despite its lengthy runtime, the song-driven monologues—from Popular to I’m Not That Girl and Defying Gravity—evoke deep emotions and leave you with a tingling sense of awe.
Final Thought
Wicked casts a spell that’s both mesmerizing and challenging, combining gravity-defying performances with moments that might leave you questioning your own investment. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande make a dynamic duo, delivering powerhouse vocals and undeniable chemistry that soars higher than any flying broomstick.
