In Netflix’s Wayward, a small town’s buried secrets come crashing to the surface when a new cop arrives with his pregnant wife. What unfolds is nearly eight hours of intense madness that redefines the meaning of “cult” in more ways than one. The series is captivating, expertly shifting between different characters’ perspectives to deliver a thrilling ride from start to finish, all while masterfully weaving a mystery grounded in small-town secrets.
We often hear that small towns harbor dark secrets, and Wayward captures that atmosphere perfectly, using Alex as our guide as we uncover shocking revelations one after another. The series relies heavily on its shock value and the gradual unfolding of its mystery—and it does so masterfully. The troubled teen industry is unsettling on its own, but when combined with cults, it creates a compelling and chilling story full of danger and suspense.
The additional layers bring a whole new level of horror to the story and seamlessly weave Laura’s narrative into the main plot. Initially, I expected Laura to be just a side character, but her storyline is integrated so well that it actually enhances the flow of the series. Laura becomes the show’s turning point, striking when you least expect it. Her character is fascinating, and the way she manipulates those around her is genuinely chilling.
The series truly rests on the strength of its cast, all of whom deliver outstanding performances. Collette, who has become one of my favorite faces in horror and thrillers lately, is exceptional. Her eerie presence creates an unsettling atmosphere that’s hard to shake. Mae Martin, playing Alex, perfectly embodies the everyman watching his world unravel. Together, their grounded performances make the series all the more compelling.

Alyvia Alyn Lind and Sydney Topliffe, portraying Leila and Abbie, deliver powerful performances that truly tug at your heartstrings as they depict the heartbreaking loss of their stolen youth. Meanwhile, Sarah Gadon’s portrayal of Laura intensifies throughout the series, catching you off guard with a chilling presence that hits hard when you least expect it.
Final Thought
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Wayward. The series expertly maintains tension while exploring its characters’ emotions, making it impossible not to become invested in their journeys. With one shocking twist after another, viewers are left stunned and deeply affected, carrying a sense of heartbreak and loss long after the credits roll. Overall, it’s a gripping and captivating watch.
