Season two of “Vikings: Valhalla” amplifies every aspect of its predecessor, boasting a grander scale in setting, narrative scope, and character development. The story branches into multiple major arcs, each character embarking on a new journey to fulfill their destiny.
Picking up immediately after the events of the first season, the aftermath of Kattegat’s fall looms large. Forkbeard’s forces have seized control, capturing Olaf, while Freydis and Harald remain in hiding. Leif grapples with the emotional and spiritual turmoil sparked by Liv’s death, and Queen Emma rules England in Canute’s absence, advised by the scheming Godwin.
The second season promises more storylines, heightened conflict, and a broader geographical canvas than ever before. As the characters navigate treacherous waters and face formidable adversaries, “Vikings: Valhalla” embarks on an epic journey that spans continents and explores the depths of human ambition and resilience.
Leif embarks on a mission to locate his sister and Harald after a bounty is placed on their heads by Olaf’s men, compelling them to flee Denmark alongside a group of Viking refugees displaced by the advancing Christian army. Despite being allowed to fight together one last time, their paths diverge unexpectedly. The trio is eventually separated, with the Last Daughter of Uppsala journeying to Jomsburg, a legendary Viking stronghold dedicated to preserving the old religious practices. Meanwhile, Harald and Leif head eastward toward the city of Novgorod in the Kievan Rus, aiming to gain King Yaroslav’s support for Harald’s claim to the Norwegian crown against Olaf.
As a result, many of the season’s major storylines appear somewhat isolated from one another, but each serves to expand the series’ world. While the original “Vikings” largely centered around Kattegat, this series broadens its scope to encompass continents, ranging from the snowy steppes of Kievan Rus to the lands of the Pecheneg tribes in central Asia, and even to Constantinople’s gates. While Vikings are commonly associated with western exploration, they historically ventured as far as northern Africa and Iran.
During their journey eastward, Suter and Corlett delve into Leif and Harald’s dynamic in fresh and engaging ways, portraying their bro-like camaraderie with unexpected charm. As they venture beyond Scandinavia, they encounter diverse new cultures and individuals, including the gifted Muslim scholar Mariam and the enigmatic Pecheneg prisoner Kurya, who proves to be more than meets the eye.
Freydis’s narrative unfolds somewhat independently as she endeavors to carve out a new identity among the people of Jomsborg, who revere her as a mythical figure sent by the gods. However, her idyllic surroundings are marred by internal conflict, particularly with the group’s leader, Harekr. Bradley James delivers a compelling performance as Harekr, exuding a formidable presence as the primary antagonist who challenges Freydis’s ideals of unity and safety within their newfound sanctuary.
The greatest strength of “Valhalla” lies in its ensemble cast, with each member fully committing to their respective roles. Suter’s portrayal of would-be king Harald is a highlight, as he revels in the character’s accidental adventures. From bargaining with Russian merchants for furs to engaging in shirtless boxing matches for money, Harald’s life as a fugitive suits his adventurous spirit. His decision to ferry an important item to the Emperor of Constantinople reflects his ambition to claim Norway’s throne.
Leif, played by Corlett, finds himself somewhat overshadowed by Harald’s exploits in season 2. However, Corlett imbues his character’s internal journey with depth and meaning, particularly as Leif grapples with grief and questions his beliefs following Liv’s death. Through repeated tragedies, Leif emerges as a figure resembling the renowned explorer he is destined to become.
Gustavsson’s portrayal of Freydis stands out in season 2, as her character undergoes significant growth emotionally, spiritually, and politically. As she rises as a leader and embraces her role as Keeper of the Faith, Freydis’s journey is both satisfying and compelling to watch. Despite her proficiency in violence, it is her care and kindness towards others that solidify her as a formidable force. Gustavsson adeptly balances Freydis’s inner strength with her genuine compassion, making her a standout character embodying the best aspects of Viking culture.
While “Valhalla” season 2 is not without flaws, such as its occasional disregard for historical accuracy and weaker subplots, it remains an immensely entertaining series. The reduced focus on England and predictable conflicts detract from the overall experience. However, the series continues to captivate with its thrilling battles, intricate rituals, and compelling female characters who drive the narrative alongside their male counterparts. As season 3 looms, the stage is set for an even grander journey, leaving viewers eager to see where “Valhalla” will venture next.
