Vaa Vaathiyaar Review :-
In interviews, director Nalan Kumarasamy said he wanted Vaa Vaathiyaar to be his take on the classic masala film. That’s exactly what the movie delivers—a mix of the simple MGR-style formula with modern plot elements from Maaveeran, creating a fun and nostalgic tribute to old-school masala films.
The film takes some time to pick up, with the opening scenes feeling a bit familiar and the pacing uneven, thanks to too many songs appearing frequently. However, Santhosh Narayanan’s short, catchy tracks and his score do a great job of highlighting the emotional moments.
Things get more interesting once the main conflict begins. A group of anonymous hacker-activists exposes a plot by power broker Periasamy (Sathyaraj) and the chief minister (Nizhalgal Ravi) to attack a Sterlite-like protest. The government wants to stop them before they threaten a €142 million business deal. How Ramu—a corrupt cop pretending to be a do-gooder for his grandfather (Rajkiran), a devoted MGR fan—gets involved, and where the original Vaathiyaar fits into all of this, forms the central twist of the story.
Vaa Vaathiyaar proves that even in today’s world of hyper-masculine action and romantic films, you can still make an exciting commercial entertainer without relying on guns or excessive violence. The action scenes show the hero taking on dozens of henchmen (and even cops) in classic MGR-style swashbuckling. Karthi, taking on a challenging role due to MGR’s legendary status, doesn’t just imitate him. Instead, he captures the spirit of MGR’s screen persona, creating moments that feel genuine and heartfelt.
Vaa Vaathiyaar Trailor :-
Credit goes to Nalan for guiding the actor on how to handle these scenes perfectly. While the film includes several nods to classic MGR moments, the director also succeeds in giving a fresh, modern take on the iconic song Raajavin Paarvai Raaniyin Pakkam.
Final Thought
The film could have been stronger with a more effective villain. Periyasamy is set up to be ruthless and powerful, and with Sathyaraj in the role, expectations are high—but the character doesn’t fully deliver. Similarly, there’s some setup for Nivas, a rival cop determined to catch Ramu, but this subplot, which could have added tension, is left unresolved.
