Ana, an art history student drowning in credit card debt and overstaying her welcome at her sister’s place, finally lands an internship at the prestigious Erwings Auction House in New York. It’s a chance for her to get closer to her dream of opening her own art gallery, but impressing her boss, the exacting director Claire (Marisa Tomei), proves to be a daunting task. Yet, when Ana manages to catch Claire’s attention, she’s promoted to Claire’s third assistant and accompanies her on a trip to London.
Excited for the opportunity but wary of Claire’s snooty first and second assistants, Suzette (Rachel Matthews) and Renee (Fola Evans Akingbola), Ana finds herself unexpectedly upgraded to first class. There, she meets William (Archie Renaux), a wealthy Londoner, and their connection sparks. However, Ana fabricates her job title and accommodations, leading to a tangled web of deceit, especially when she meets William’s mother, Catherine (Lena Olin).
Balancing her dual lives becomes increasingly challenging as Ana juggles Claire’s demanding tasks, her budding romance with William, and her newfound access to high society events. With an important auction looming, Ana struggles to keep her secrets hidden, knowing it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out.
While “Upgraded” offers a familiar rom-com premise, the chemistry between Mendes and Renaux falls short, and the storyline feels formulaic, reminiscent of “The Devil Wears Prada.” However, Marisa Tomei shines as the formidable Claire, adding depth to the film. Despite Ana’s ambitious and resourceful character, her implausible charade and predictable plot twists dampen the overall impact. “Upgraded” provides a passable watch for those seeking a familiar romantic comedy experience.
