Untold: The Murder of Air McNair (Netflix) Review :-

The Murder of Air McNair is a compelling true-crime documentary with a strong sports element. While it covers Steve McNair’s football career, the majority of the film focuses on the investigation into his shocking murder. The documentary combines archival news and game footage with interviews from McNair’s football peers, reporters, and police officials involved in the case.

Netflix’s UNTOLD series returns with its fourth season of standalone sports documentaries, tackling significant topics, but none as grave as a murder-suicide. The Murder of Air McNair leans more towards traditional cable-TV true-crime formats rather than the 30 for 30 style.

The documentary features key figures from McNair’s life and career, including his longtime friend and Alcorn State teammate Robert Gaddy, one of the first to discover McNair after his death. Emotional insights are also provided by his Titans coach, Jeff Fisher, who still struggles to hold back tears when recounting his experiences with McNair.

Steve McNair, once a cherished football star, was tragically murdered. This is the essence of UNTOLD: The Murder of Air McNair, a documentary that dives into this somber story. But is there more complexity beneath the surface?

The documentary unfolds much like other true-crime features, reminiscent of an episode of Dateline. It juxtaposes McNair’s joyful life with the sorrowful end. The facts are grimly familiar: on July 4, 2009, McNair was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds, alongside his 20-year-old girlfriend, Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi. The ensuing investigation explored several suspects, including a close friend and business partner of McNair, and Kazemi’s jealous ex-boyfriend. Ultimately, the case concluded as a murder-suicide perpetrated by Kazemi.

Untold: The Murder of Air McNair (Netflix) Trailor :-

The documentary thoroughly covers both the crime and its investigation, presenting footage from various police interviews with key figures such as Robert Gaddy, McNair’s business associate; Wayne Neely, a friend; and Keith Norfleet, Kazemi’s ex-boyfriend. Additionally, it includes audio recordings from interviews with Kazemi’s colleagues and friends, which offer insights into their relationship. Reporter Amy Viteri, who was with WKRN News in Nashville at the time, helps weave these elements into a cohesive narrative.

The true-crime story is somewhat clumsily interwoven with a retrospective of McNair’s football career. This includes highlights such as his drafting by the Houston Oilers, his pivotal role in the “Music City Miracle” playoff win against the Buffalo Bills in 2000, and the heartbreaking one-yard-short loss in Super Bowl XXXIV to the St. Louis Rams, known as the “Greatest Show on Turf.”

Near the end of the hour-long documentary, private investigator Vincent Hill introduces an alternative theory regarding McNair’s death. Hill suggests that Adrian Gilliam, a former lover of Kazemi’s, might have been responsible and that the crime could be linked to a financial dispute between McNair and Gaddy. Gaddy reacts strongly to this theory, calling Hill’s suggestions “totally disgusting.” Coach Jeff Fisher, visibly uneasy, offers a more measured response, acknowledging that while there are inconsistencies, he prefers not to speculate further.

This late-in-the-game theory feels like an attempt to add intrigue to a story that already has a clear resolution. The lack of substantial evidence behind the theory makes it seem more like a controversial footnote rather than a meaningful revelation. Regardless, it doesn’t alter the fundamental tragedy of McNair’s death.
