Untold: Sign Stealer Season 4 (Netflix) Review :-

UNTOLD: Sign Stealer isn’t intended to be the definitive account of Michigan’s championship season. Instead, it’s Connor Stalions’ opportunity to present his side of the story. The documentary includes insights from prominent college football reporters and individuals connected to Stalions and the Michigan football program, all framed around Stalions’ personal recounting of events.

To grasp Connor Stalions’ story, it’s essential to know this: from a young age, he aspired to be the head football coach at Michigan. Growing up in a Wolverine-enthusiastic family, football was his passion. He chose to attend the United States Naval Academy not for a military career but as a strategic move towards his coaching dreams. As he puts it, “I entered the military with the intention of coming out to coach football.”

While at the Naval Academy, Stalions secured a student coaching position with Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo. His initial task was to analyze signals during a game against his long-time rival, Ohio State—a challenge he excelled at, reportedly helping the Midshipmen come close to defeating the Buckeyes.

College football reporter Dan Wetzel explains, “Every team has a person responsible for sign-stealing, which is a part of the college football subculture. It’s important to note that sign-stealing is permissible. Teams can watch TV broadcasts to observe an offensive coordinator’s signals and decipher their meaning. They can even contact opponents who faced the same team earlier to learn what signs they picked up.”

There’s a point where sign-stealing crosses into forbidden territory, and Stalions’ early success might have blurred that line for him. Detroit News reporter Tony Paul observes, “There’s no denying the impressive traits and ambition of this individual, but perhaps his drive went too far.”

In 2018, Stalions managed to secure a position with his beloved Wolverines, leveraging the sign-deciphering skills he had honed at Navy. According to his account, his work had previously been limited to analyzing signs from live games or TV broadcasts. However, he soon became involved in an “underground network of college football analysts” exchanging schemes, playbooks, game plans, and signals.

“From my experience, 80 to 90% of teams have someone dedicated to intel operations,” Stalions reflects. “So when I immersed myself in the world of college football intelligence, I thought, ‘I’m a Marine Corps captain—there’s no way they can be better at this than I am, right?’”

At this stage, Michigan was struggling. Jim Harbaugh, the much-anticipated coach expected to restore the Wolverines to prominence, had yet to defeat rivals Michigan State and Ohio State. In Stalions’ account, Michigan was lagging in the sign-stealing arena, outmatched by lesser programs that had cracked their codes. Stalions saw himself as the team’s savior. This scenario evokes a parallel to Barry Bonds’ reaction to Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s steroid-enhanced home run records—prompting Bonds to raise the bar even higher.

“Michigan’s performance surged significantly in 2021,” Wetzel observes, “so it’s reasonable to question the impact Connor Stalions had.” Stalions himself does not refute this. “I’m rarely wrong,” he asserts, proudly displaying a game ball from Michigan’s 2022 win over Iowa and showcasing the extensive Google Docs, maps, and spreadsheets that make up his renowned manifesto—evidence of his intense dedication to the game, a trait often praised in coaches like Harbaugh.

However, the situation unraveled late in 2023. Stalions’ sign-stealing activities were exposed, leading to his swift departure from the program. According to Stalions, he was willing to take the fall to clear Harbaugh and the team, demonstrating his deep loyalty to Michigan. Despite his absence, the Wolverines continued to thrive—“at the end of the season, with no Connor Stalions and no sign-stealing, they’re still winning,” Wetzel notes. Yet, when video surfaced of Stalions disguised on Central Michigan’s sidelines during a game against Michigan State, the scandal escalated into a full-blown farce that only college football could deliver.

A masked Ohio State fan known as “Brohio” sheds light on the message-board culture that exposed the Stalions scandal. “As a college football reporter, I’m familiar with message boards and occasionally check them out,” reporter Nicole Auerbach explains. “But this was the first time I saw message board rumors actually come to fruition.”

Tracing the financial trail reveals that Stalions, or individuals using tickets he purchased, attended numerous other college football games over the years. Stadium security footage verified that someone was filming from these specific seats. The scale of the operation suggests it’s hard to believe Stalions managed it all on his own—especially given the substantial personal cost involved. Additionally, there’s persuasive evidence that Ohio State may have played a role in delivering a comprehensive investigation to the NCAA, further implicating their longtime rival.

A key unresolved issue in the Stalions scandal is the extent of institutional support he received for his actions. To frame it in Watergate terms: What did Jim Harbaugh know, and when did he know it? The masked Brohio highlights the unusual nature of Harbaugh’s swift departure for an NFL job, remarking, “We’ve never seen a coach win a national championship and leave, taking his entire staff with him.” The NCAA’s investigation continues, and the potential sanctions for Michigan are still pending.

Despite the controversy, Stalions appears to take pride in his role in the saga. His name will forever be associated with the Wolverines’ championship, and even with the infamy, he seems content with the connection. “Do I wish I could have been there with them? Sure. But as long as Michigan football won the national championship and my brothers got to experience that, that’s all that matters to me.”
