Uninvited (Netflix) Review :-

Uninvited, an official entry in the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival, tells the gripping story of a mother’s relentless quest for justice after her daughter’s murder. Vilma Santos delivers a powerful performance as Lilia Capistrano—a calm, calculated woman driven by a singular purpose: to see her daughter’s killer, Guilly Vega, brought to justice. Alongside Lilia’s journey, the film also unfolds the story of Vega’s daughter, Nicole, deepening the emotional layers of the narrative.

While films often depict violence and abuse, Uninvited presents a harrowing perspective by showing a mother reliving her daughter’s trauma. Santos embodies a profound heartbreak that’s impossible to overlook. Her gaze toward Guilly is charged with a complex mix of resentment and sorrow, drawing viewers into her pain as the full weight of her tragedy unfolds.

This campy revenge thriller is a treat for viewers who enjoy a dose of dramatic flair. The second half fully embraces the camp, with Vilma Santos and Aga Muhlach diving into it wholeheartedly. However, the film’s pacing is uneven at times, dragging to the point where it might test the audience’s patience. The excessive melodrama weighs down the runtime, and if you pay attention, there’s little to no action until the final 20 minutes of this 93-minute movie.

I was left uncertain about what this film was trying to be. It’s neither truly thrilling nor packed with adrenaline-fueled action. As noted earlier, it leans more toward melodrama, focusing on emotion rather than revenge. We follow Lilia as she navigates the highs and lows of her reality, planning and scheming, but very little of this translates into actual action. Watching an older woman wield a gun is a fresh take, but it becomes less convincing when her makeup remains flawless throughout.

Vilma Santos is enjoyable in her role—I believed in her grief and determination for revenge. The action sequences, however, are neither the most convincing nor the most exciting. Aga Muhlach, playing Guilly Vega, is excellent, embodying the sinister look one would expect from a villain. Meanwhile, Nadine Lustre’s Nicole barely registers in the film, mainly assisting Lilia at the end. Nicole’s character is introduced with potential but quickly fades into the background.

Uninvited (Netflix) Trailor :-

I also found the film to be quite clichéd—there’s a moment when Guilly opens his safe to reveal trophies from his victims, a scene so predictable it made me roll my eyes. The whole movie feels overly familiar and repetitive, to the point where it becomes unintentionally amusing. It’s almost surreal how much it leans on tired tropes.

Final Thought

Uninvited ends up being surprisingly anticlimactic. You’d expect a grieving mother to pursue revenge with relentless determination, but instead, the film spends too much time on melodrama and setting up the circumstances rather than delivering the revenge itself. Despite my high hopes going in, the movie ultimately feels disappointing. I really wish this fierce older woman had turned out to be the gun-slinging badass the story seemed to promise!
