Umjolo: My Beginning My End (Netflix) Review :-

The movie follows Mayi, who forms an immediate bond with Zweli on her 30th birthday, a connection neither of them can shake. However, her situation is complicated as Mayi is already engaged to someone else, whose family owns a successful company. On one hand, she has a secure future, but on the other, there’s a man she can’t help but love. Faced with this dilemma, what choice will she ultimately make?

While the plot may seem predictable, echoing familiar themes from films like Dirty Dancing and Say Anything, it offers more than just the typical trope of a bride or groom running away at the altar. The film provides a unique perspective, exploring not only the conflicting emotions of the two characters but also the deeper complexities of love and commitment.

While the characters are aware of the situation, what truly makes this story compelling is how Mayi finds a sense of freedom through her connection with Zweli. No longer confined to the role of a bride marrying into a wealthy family, struggling to please her demanding mother-in-law, she becomes a woman who can act on her desires and follow her heart. However, it’s important to note that the film leans heavily on idealized love and strays far from realism. So, if you’re approaching this movie with a logical mindset, it’s best to set that aside.

The reason I was left in shock by the ending is due to its suddenness. Everything seemed to be progressing smoothly, and it felt acceptable up until the end, but then it took an unexpected turn. It wasn’t because of Mayi’s clear choice or how she decides to break free, but because I was comparing this film to the others in the series. In the first film, Lethu ends with a powerful dance (at Mayi’s wedding, no less), and in the second, Zenele asserts herself and embraces her role as a single mother. However, this film somehow feels off to me.

I’m not being overly realistic here, but the flow of this film felt disrupted, and I’m struggling to accept how things unfolded. Also, I have to say that the Umjolo series needs another set of films that offer a more fulfilling ending for the men left heartbroken in these stories. They truly deserve better conclusions.

The cinematography in this film is just as smooth and polished as the other films in the series, which adds a reassuring quality to the viewing experience. The story flows effortlessly, without any disruptions. Mayi’s negative feelings about the wedding are clearly influenced not only by her love for Zweli but also by the oppressive atmosphere created by her mother-in-law. Her emotions are clearly reflected on her face, showing that there are deeper reasons for her resistance to the wedding beyond her connection to Zweli.

I do wish the film had delved more into Mayi’s character, rather than focusing so heavily on the immediate bond she forms with Zweli. On the other hand, I’ve noticed how these films challenge traditional norms in their own unique way. Whether it’s accepting a man’s infidelity, exploring interracial marriages, or, in this case, marrying your deceased brother’s wife, the films break with convention and highlight the evolving perspectives of the younger generation. This shift in traditions has been particularly intriguing to watch.

Overall, this film was an okay watch, but it didn’t quite measure up to the enjoyment I found in the other films in this anthology.

Umjolo: My Beginning, My End offers a plot that feels familiar, and while it does have a few interesting and unique elements, the ending could have been more satisfying. It’s an okay watch, but not something worth prioritizing.
