Uglies (Netflix) Review :-
What struck me as particularly amusing while watching Uglies was the portrayal of Joey King and the other attractive, fit characters as “ugly,” while those deemed “pretty” have unusual features like golden eyes and peculiar hairstyles. Despite living in a world where filters are ubiquitous, even the most influenced TikTok users recognize that golden eyes are charming only in medieval fantasy settings with fairies and vampires. Essentially, the film’s concept of beauty feels outdated, even for a generation that is constantly striving to be the best version of themselves, appearance-wise.
The movie feels tedious and repetitive, largely because it treads familiar ground with its focus on inner beauty and embracing individuality. Tally’s journey, which involves a quest for physical attractiveness only to discover that true beauty lies within, follows a well-worn path. She will inevitably rebel against the oppressive system forcing teenagers into this brutal procedure and strive to change the world… or something along those lines.
Another issue is that the film comes across as flat and uninspired, seeming more concerned with moving from one plot point to the next without much emotional depth. While Tally’s relationships with Peris and Shay offer some warmth, the world-building and conflicts lack intrigue or originality. Even within the realm of YA, which can often offer refreshing twists, this film feels disappointingly conventional.
In the end, the film takes us through a series of CGI-heavy landscapes, all of which are superficially “beautiful” but lack any real depth or soul. The visual style, along with the oddly golden-eyed “pretty” people, comes off as excessively artificial. It’s almost laughable, even during serious moments, making it hard to take anything seriously. Despite the actors’ earnest efforts, the film feels like an empty shell, leaving you emotionally unfulfilled.

As Tally tries to make amends towards the end, her efforts, along with those of the other characters, lack genuine conviction. The film’s predictable clichés are painfully obvious, causing frustration as each plot twist and character decision becomes clear from the moment it begins. It’s hard not to roll your eyes at the obviousness of it all.
Final Thoughts
The film concludes on an open-ended note, hinting at a potential sequel, as we say goodbye to Uglies with Joey King appearing almost like an AI-generated model. If that doesn’t capture the essence of the film and how it left me feeling, I’m not sure what will.
