Tyler Perry’s Straw opens with a clear glimpse into the struggles of its protagonist. Janiyah, a single mother barely keeping her life together, faces an even greater blow when Child Services takes her baby away. Just when you think her hardships have peaked, the film keeps you on edge, revealing just how much more her situation can unravel.

As the story unfolds, it feels like the whole world is stacked against Janiyah. Yet beneath this, the film reflects a harsh reality: society often meets unsupported single mothers with cold judgment and neglect.

Janiyah, who only wanted $40 for her daughter’s school lunch, finds herself unwittingly caught up in a bank robbery completely by accident. Among the few who show her any genuine kindness is police officer Raymond, who shares a similar background—he, too, was raised by a single mother and is a single parent himself.

The film unapologetically embraces a feminist perspective, consistently highlighting the struggles women face. The women in the story support and lift each other up, while most of the men fail to understand Janiyah’s plight. The film also tackles important issues like racism, illustrated by a white cop’s relentless determination to pin all the blame on Janiyah.

One of the most powerful moments comes when Janiyah speaks to a police officer on the phone, with everyone overhearing her heartfelt complaints. She asks tough, thought-provoking questions that force you to confront just how hard it is for some people to survive, even at the most basic level.

Janiyah forms some meaningful connections throughout the film, most notably with Nicole, the bank manager. However, not all women offer support—one bank employee, in particular, shows a striking lack of empathy despite hearing Janiyah’s entire story.

The movie keeps its audience simmering with frustration until the very end, highlighting the relentless unfairness Janiyah endures. Taraji P. Henson delivers a powerful and convincing performance, capturing her character’s struggles with remarkable depth. In fact, every actor in the film shines, bringing their roles to life with authenticity and impact.

I absolutely loved this film and consider it one of the best I’ve seen all year. It delivers a compelling blend of tragedy and suspense thriller that comes together surprisingly well. Taraji P. Henson masterfully portrays a shattered mother, bringing such depth to her role that her story lingers long after the credits roll.
