This event prompts her to break down and reflect on the abusive marriage she was once determined to salvage. Through introspection, she comes to realize how her ex-husband prevented her from being with her true soulmate.
Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa was a perplexing mix—boring yet salacious, tinged with disbelief. Similarly, Divorce in the Black presents a different take on a familiar theme. Centered on domestic violence, the film follows Ava, whose love for her husband quickly turns to fear after staying at her parents’ house for just a week. Cory Hardrict delivers a compelling performance as Dallas, embodying the role with convincing intensity that makes him thoroughly detestable.
However, the film falters in its portrayal of Dallas. He lacks a developed backstory or compelling reasons for his abusive behavior, except for fleeting hints at past trauma. This oversight diminishes his complexity, reducing him to a one-dimensional antagonist—a man who simply enjoys hurting his wife. Despite this narrative flaw, Hardrict’s portrayal remains a standout in the film.

Moreover, Ava’s behavior at times seems delusional—initially believing she could repair her relationship with an abuser and later thinking she can fend him off alone. In reality, fiery speeches alone wouldn’t deter someone intent on harm.
These sequences are what make Ava thoroughly unlikable. Her unrealistic approach doesn’t benefit anyone, but thankfully, her parents are more level-headed than she is. Richard Lawson shines as Clarence, Ava’s father, who takes decisive action when his daughter’s life is threatened. Taylor Polidore delivers a strong performance as Rona, discussing the swift acquisition of a restraining order against Dallas, though the speed of this process remains unclear.
The film’s inconsistencies and outright unrealistic moments prevent Divorce in the Black from becoming a gritty, relatable thriller or a cautionary tale for women prioritizing their safety. The plot feels contrived and underdeveloped, offering few new insights into its subject matter. While there are genuine moments of fear for Ava’s safety, her casual approach to her abusive husband is frustrating. Moreover, the film seems content with a generic storyline that at times feels exploitative of a serious issue.
