Michael Shanks’s Together hooks you immediately with its striking premise: a couple in a strained relationship begins to physically fuse together. It sounds absurd—and in many ways, it is—but the film transcends its high-concept setup through a sincere exploration of its core idea. While body horror is present, it serves a deeper purpose: illustrating the gradual decay of a long-term relationship. The film embraces discomfort without ever becoming cruel, ultimately delivering an intimate portrait of two people forced to face the very issues they’ve long avoided.
The story centers on Millie (Alison Brie) and Tim (Dave Franco), a long-term couple who leave the city for a small rural town, hoping to start anew. Millie takes a teaching job, while Tim clings to the dream of finally breaking through as a musician after years of struggle. But the move does little to ease their simmering frustrations. During a hike, they stumble into a cave where Tim drinks from a mysterious spring. What follows is a slow, unsettling transformation—their bodies begin to fuse together. Skin and bone meld, and every attempt to separate brings excruciating pain. As their physical bond tightens, it becomes a haunting metaphor for their tangled emotional connection—messy, uncomfortable, and impossible to escape. Interwoven with their story is that of a mysterious neighbor whose cryptic presence nudges the film toward eerie folk-horror territory.
