Time Bandits (AppleTv) Review :-

If one were to pick a modern successor to Monty Python, the New Zealand comedy troupe led by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi would be a prime candidate. Their style of humor, blending the absurd with the clever, fits seamlessly with the kind of zany sketches Python fans cherish. Given their knack for inventive comedy, it’s no surprise that Clement and Waititi, along with “The Inbetweeners” creator Iain Morris, chose to adapt Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” into a TV series. The result is a fitting homage to Gilliam’s fantastical and intricate style, as well as the distinctive humor of the original script co-written with Michael Palin.

Unlike many recent feature-to-series adaptations, such as “Sexy Beast” or “Fatal Attraction,” “Time Bandits” is perfectly suited for episodic storytelling. When 11-year-old Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) stumbles upon a time-travel portal in his bedroom, he dives into his passion for history with gusto. With the backing of Apple TV+, the series vividly brings each historical era to life, from Mansa Musa’s opulent procession through 14th-century Africa to the verdant landscapes of feudal Japan. Leveraging modern technology and resources, including CGI and the substantial budget from Apple, “Time Bandits” crafts a richly detailed and immersive historical adventure.

Kevin is joined on his adventures by the titular band of misfits, led with flair by the overconfident Penelope, portrayed brilliantly by Lisa Kudrow. Equipped with a stolen map that reveals portals like the one in Kevin’s room, the Bandits are small-time crooks caught in a cosmic tug-of-war between two powerful forces: Waititi’s Supreme Being, the godlike entity who originally owned the map, and Wrongness (a prosthetic-clad Clement), a quasi-Satanic figure bent on seizing the map for his nefarious plans. Despite their charm as underdogs, the Bandits struggle with their mission. Widget (Roger Jean Nsengiyumva) is a navigator who lacks navigation skills, while Judy (Charlyne Yi, who left the production early following an alleged assault) is an empath who isn’t very adept at reading others’ emotions.

Time Bandits (AppleTv) Trailor :-

The Bandits, a mismatched crew out of sync with their own times, bear a resemblance to the amateur pirates from “Our Flag Means Death,” a Max comedy that Waititi executive produced and starred in before its cancellation this year. For fans missing that show, “Time Bandits” offers a satisfying alternative. However, the series stands apart as a family show, aligning with Apple’s recent ventures into children’s programming, including reboots of “Fraggle Rock” and the upcoming “Yo Gabba Gabba.” Catering to a younger audience fits perfectly within the expertise of Clement and Waititi, known for projects like Waititi’s “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” While “Time Bandits” may not delve deeply into heavy emotions, it is infused with the playful, bumbling charm typical of Clement and Waititi’s work (Penelope instructs her crew to “employ the scurry” for escape). The show is anchored by Kevin’s heartfelt wonder, offering a practical outlet for his endless trivia, which otherwise bores his family to tears.

In “Time Bandits,” Kevin is the central character, but Lisa Kudrow is undeniably the comedic force driving the show. As Penelope, she portrays a character who claims to lead the Bandits as an egalitarian collective, “because that’s the way I like it.” However, in reality, Penelope is more arrogant, impulsive, and naive, often acting more like a child compared to Kevin’s maturity. Kudrow skillfully blends the quirky charm of Phoebe Buffay from “Friends” with the self-absorbed humor of Valerie Cherish from “The Comeback,” offering a fresh showcase of her talents to a new generation. While “Time Bandits” impresses with its imaginative setup and striking visuals, its true strength lies in the simple joys brought to life by Kudrow’s performance.
