Larson, whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 35 due to an aortic aneurysm, left behind a legacy that includes the groundbreaking musical “Rent” and the autobiographical “Tick, Tick … Boom!” Miranda pays homage to Larson’s work by meticulously recreating his world, from his humble abode on Greenwich Street to the Scorpions cassette on his shelf.

“Tick, Tick … Boom!” delves into Larson’s inner turmoil and anxieties, portrayed with kinetic desperation by Andrew Garfield. As Larson grapples with the pressures of success and the fear of failure, he stakes his hopes on his ambitious sci-fi operetta, “Superbia.” Meanwhile, his relationship with his girlfriend Susan, played by Alexandra Shipp, and his friendship with Michael, portrayed by Robin de Jesús, undergoes strain as they navigate their own paths.

Garfield’s portrayal of Larson captures his vulnerability and relentless pursuit of his dreams. Despite not being a seasoned singer, Garfield delivers a sincere performance, supported by his capable voice. His dancing exudes joy and energy, reminiscent of David Byrne’s style, filling the screen with his enthusiastic movements.

Miranda’s reverence for Larson’s legacy is evident throughout the film, though it occasionally limits the story’s broader appeal. While Garfield’s performance shines, the film’s narrow focus on Larson’s anxieties may prevent it from resonating with a wider audience. Nevertheless, the film’s centerpiece number, featuring an array of stage legends, brings a touch of Broadway glamour to this intimate portrayal of Larson’s life and aspirations.
