“Those About to Die” is a captivating spectacle that pulls out all the stops to achieve grandeur. The series features an intriguing plot that immerses viewers in the lives of Rome’s elite. Based on the same book that inspired Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator,” this drama showcases strong performances, a vast narrative scope, and stunning production design. Although the roughly ten-hour runtime could have been condensed to eight episodes, the engaging storyline easily keeps distractions at bay. It vividly depicts what Rome might have looked like around 79 AD.
Set in a decadent Rome, many citizens indulge in hedonism. Emperor Vespasian (Anthony Hopkins), now aging and nearing the end of his reign, must choose his successor between his sons, Titus (Tom Hughes) and Domitian (Jojo Macari). When Titus is named the next emperor, Domitian views it as a personal defeat. The era is marked by Romans flocking to specially built arenas for brutal gladiatorial contests and chariot races at Circus Maximus. Tenax (Iwan Rheon), a savvy businessman, manages Circus Maximus and dreams of forming his own chariot racing faction alongside Scorpus (Dimitri Leonidas), the empire’s top charioteer. Their ambitions put them at odds with rival patricians who own competing factions. Meanwhile, the story of Cala (Sara Martins), an African woman determined to rescue her enslaved children, unfolds in parallel.

The gladiator and chariot race scenes are expertly filmed, vividly bringing these ancient events to life. Additionally, the series delves into themes of power, corruption, betrayal, and human emotion, setting a new benchmark for historical dramas.
Anthony Hopkins delivers a commanding performance as Emperor Vespasian, exuding authority and intensity. Jojo Macari stands out as Vespasian’s son, a shrewd politician eager to win his father’s favor. Tom Hughes, known for his role in “Game of Thrones,” portrays Vespasian’s second son, Titus, and brings a formidable presence to the screen. However, it’s Iwan Rheon as Tenax who truly captivates, embodying an ambitious man controlling the city’s gambling scene while striving to establish his own faction. His performance is exceptional. Sara Martins also makes a strong impression as Cala, a Numidian woman who journeys to Rome to rescue her enslaved children.
Directed by Roland Emmerich, renowned for films like “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Godzilla,” and “Independence Day,” this series explores power dynamics in ancient Rome. Emmerich infuses his signature style of special effects-driven action into the narrative. While the series boasts an epic scale, it does have its shortcomings. The screenplay often follows familiar tropes seen in similar series, resulting in clichéd moments. Unfortunately, it doesn’t venture into anything groundbreaking, which is disappointing given its strengths in other areas. Despite these minor issues, the series captivates you for nearly ten hours. The breathtaking visuals of the Flavian Amphitheatre, Numidia, Ostia Harbour, and the House of Titus, along with other Roman landmarks, are truly stunning. Approach this series as a commercial spectacle, and you’ll be richly rewarded.
