The Sabarmati Report examines the tragic Godhra incident, where 59 passengers aboard the Sabarmati Express lost their lives in 2002. With a concise two-hour runtime, the film keeps viewers engaged for the most part, offering a critical perspective that challenges conventional narratives. It suggests that history has often been shaped by biased viewpoints and calls for a re-evaluation of the events. However, a more grounded and nuanced approach could have made the film even more impactful. The first half of the film largely shifts focus away from the Godhra incident itself, instead exploring how a broadcast channel manipulated its coverage to benefit the ruling party, exploiting political connections for gain.

The film follows Samar Kumar (Vikrant Massey), a Hindi journalist who is recruited by Mahika (Ridhi Dogra), a no-nonsense reporter working for a leading broadcast channel. Together, they head to Godhra to cover the aftermath of the tragic incident. However, when Mahika receives a call from her boss, the narrative takes a drastic shift, framing the event as a mere accident. As Samar digs deeper into the story, he uncovers a version of events that sharply contradicts the official coverage. When he confronts his employer, he is promptly fired. Struggling with unemployment and sinking into depression, Samar turns to alcohol. As the fifth anniversary of the incident approaches, the network assigns Amrita Gill (Raashi Khanna) to revisit the case, and she turns to Samar for help. Together, they prepare an honest, unfiltered account of the tragedy.

Vikrant Massey delivers a compelling portrayal of Samar, capturing the inner turmoil of an idealistic reporter with authenticity. Raashi Khanna is solid as Amrita, a producer seeking the truth, but it’s Ridhi Dogra who truly stands out as Mahika—a ruthless, power-driven journalist. Her performance is striking, exuding a chilling sense of control and self-entitlement. However, the film falters in its attention to detail. The depiction of journalists traveling long distances to Delhi solely to deliver tapes feels unrealistic, as such tasks would typically be handled by bus drivers or flight passengers in that era. Moreover, by 2002, OB vans were commonly used for live satellite transmissions, making the portrayal of traditional delivery methods anachronistic. Additionally, Mahika’s character relies heavily on stereotypes, which may diminish the film’s overall credibility.
