The Pickup (AmazonPrimeVideo) Review :-
In Prime Video’s The Pickup, two mismatched armored truck drivers get caught up in a hijacking that quickly spirals into a dangerous heist—though the stakes, and the comedy, feel disappointingly low. Despite a talented cast, the film plays it safe, delivering a surface-level story that, much like its characters, struggles to engage.
The story unfolds predictably, offering few twists or surprises, which makes the outcome feel inevitable and leaves the viewer disengaged. Films like this often lack nuance and depth, delivering a formulaic experience where nothing feels truly unexpected or fresh. The sparse twists are easy to foresee, further diminishing any sense of excitement or suspense.
The last time I watched an Eddie Murphy comedy was Candy Cane Lane and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F—both of which fell flat and failed to deliver laughs. The Pickup unfortunately follows a similar path, leaving us wondering what exactly in the constant bickering between Russell and Travis is meant to be funny.
That’s not to say bickering can’t be hilarious, but Murphy and Davidson offer little that’s genuinely witty or entertaining here. Davidson leans into his familiar “dim-witted guy caught in a heist” persona, which comes across as bland and uninspired, making the whole experience feel more like a chore than a comedy.
The Pickup (AmazonPrimeVideo) Trailor :-
Sure, there are a few entertaining moments scattered throughout, but overall, the story fails to deliver any real thrill or suspense. The chase scenes are predictable, and Keke Palmer’s Zoe, intended as the antagonist, comes off more flirtatious than frightening. As mentioned earlier, the stakes feel practically nonexistent, which becomes increasingly apparent as the film progresses. At no point do you genuinely worry for the protagonists, and their repeated foolishness quickly grows frustrating. Eva Longoria appears as Russell’s girlfriend, but her character’s purpose—and impact on the story—remains unclear.
Final Thought
Is The Pickup the worst movie released this year? Not quite. But it’s far from memorable. The film lacks tension and intrigue, while the humor feels bland and repetitive. The endless bickering between the two leads comes across as tired and fails to spark any real interest, leaving viewers more bored than entertained. It may not be the worst, but it certainly isn’t one of the best.
“The Pickup” is now streaming on AmazonPrimeVideo.
