Focusing on one of Brazil’s most notorious serial killers from the 1990s, The Park Maniac aims to highlight women’s strength within a thrilling narrative of murder and chaos. However, the biographical film feels disjointed, attempting to balance a story about women’s empowerment with Elena solving a complex murder, all while downplaying the killer’s presence. This ambition is commendable, but it ultimately results in a film that lacks cohesion, leaving significant portions feeling tedious and scattered.

Elena’s storyline feels underdeveloped, and the film struggles to determine whether it wants to critique journalism or simply tell a gripping story. While it tries to present Elena as a standout journalist capable of extraordinary feats, it fails to deliver the compelling presence one would expect from such a talented character. In essence, Elena comes across as a dull protagonist striving to step out of her father’s shadow but offering little substance. Though she is quick-witted, her lack of intrigue makes it hard to engage with her journey.

The film surprisingly portrays all of the victims as naive and gullible, following Francisco’s lead without a second thought, as if mesmerized by charms that remain unseen. It’s perplexing to watch, as even the most mundane conversation seems to draw them in, which feels somewhat insulting given that Elena’s character exists simultaneously. The pacing is another issue; while it aims to be a fast-paced thriller, it stumbles through scenes, leaving viewers to endure the awkwardness.

Conversely, serial killer Francisco de Assis Pereira receives little attention. Despite the brutality of his crimes, we don’t get to see his charm or delve deeply into his psyche. There’s a generic discussion about psychopathy, and Ted Bundy is mentioned once, but that’s the extent of it, which prevents us from truly understanding or fearing him. You would expect to be terrified by a serial killer who murdered ten people, but that’s not the experience here. However, I will say that Silvero Pereira delivers a chilling performance.

The Park Maniac fails to deliver a thrilling or engaging experience, ultimately leaving viewers feeling bored after a while. It overlooks many key elements you would expect from a film of this nature, leaving you with more questions than answers. The main issue is its lack of interest; the investigative narrative fails to capture attention or provoke thought. Events unfold too conveniently, and conflicting details contribute to a sense of confusion and disengagement.
